Stainless Steel Shaft of Blower Assy

01/23/2015 5:02 AM

Dear Sir

We wish to change S.S Shaft of blower assy fitted along with Motor 20 kw.

Motor side having M.S. EN8 Shaft and the same composite shaft which of SS is fitted in blower assy side.SS shaft is threaded inside MS Shaft. This blower assy used in annealing furnace 400 degree F to 500 Degree F.Customer is proposing SS Shaft of blower assy to extend to have one side of Motor bearing. Originally Motor used to have both bearing on MS shaft. The change in design of shaft will become SS shaft on one side bearing and other side MS shaft of motor.Whether it will affect Motor performance has one side of bearing is having SS Shaft

Which grade SS will be preferable for such application

Regards

Sadasivam

Talk to skf representative for high temp. and what service life you intend.

Both the existing design and the proposed design seem very odd. A picture might help.

Since you are extending the fan shaft, why not extend it all the way through the motor, remounting the rotor?

Joining two pieces of shafts by a threaded joint is not good engineering practice, unless due cares are taken to ensure the trueness of the composite shaft. If the centres of both bearings are not established (like turning/skimming after the engagement of threads) premature bearing failure are likely to happen.

This is a joke, right?

"Which grade SS will be preferable for such application"

So far, based on what you have said, any grade you can specify will do.

  • 201 Stainless Steel
  • 301 Stainless Steel
  • 301 Full Hard
  • 304 Stainless Steel
  • 304L Stainless Steel
  • 304 DDQ Stainless Steel
  • 305 Stainless Steel
  • 310/310S Stainless Steel
  • 316/316L Stainless Steel
  • 321 Stainless Steel
  • 347 Stainless Steel
  • 409 Stainless Steel
  • 409 UF Stainless Steel
  • 409 AL Stainless Steel
  • 410 Stainless Steel
  • 430 Stainless Steel
  • 439 Stainless Steel
  • 441 Stainless Steel

I am hearing first time such arrangement, It wont last for long time as threading will wear out soon. Better have one shaft and ask motor mfr.

For the purposes of being clear, I do not believe stainless steel to be useful or necessary in such an application. Especially when I learn that the part of the shaft(s) are being threaded together. Stainless steels typically have such a bad track record due to cohesive friction welding of the two metal surfaces together, I do not foresee a repeatable joining of the motor shaft and fan shaft. I would say abort this, and use some other form of coupling. Once that is done, then you will have equipment that is (a) serviceable and field repairable, and (b) you will not destroy fan or motor bearings so quickly.

You are trying to apply logic, to an illogical request.

2250 Duplex SS is a good SS shaft material but I agree with others above that this 'sounds' like a bad idea.
