You can't throw a rock at SEMA without hitting something made out of carbon fiber, but even in this sea of lightweight material, this Mustang stood out. All the bodywork—and even the wheels—is made out of carbon fiber, and while I didn't find out exactly how many pounds lighter this Pony is from stock, it looks so trick.

The iPhone Remote Controlled Car

Posted October 27, 2009 6:00 AM by CarDomain

Even though I'm a huge James Bond fan, the movies starring Pierce Brosnan never really did it for me. There were some great scenes, to be sure, but overall I think they were a little too cheesy and gadget-laden. That said, the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where 007 uses a mobile phone to drive his BMW 7 Series from the back seat was awesome.

So when I saw that the Spirit of Berlin— which has been building a fully autonomous vehicle— had created an iPhone app to control one of their projects, I was totally intrigued. Even if you're scared of being enslaved by the machines like I am, you have to admit this this pretty rad. Check out how just tilting the phone turns the wheel!

What’s Next: Solar EV Charging Stations

Posted October 19, 2009 11:51 AM by CarDomain

Worried that your EV might be powered by electricity produced by burning coal? Then charge it at one of these new portable solar EV charging stations built by SunPods. This solution is being rolled out in San Jose, but could come to your city in the near future.

According to Autopia, "The installation marks the first time SunPods' SP-300 EV Plug-N-Go portable charging station for solar-electric cars has been put to a real-world test. Aside from needing an electrician to make the electrical connections, the technology is literally plug-and-play. After it's delivered from the factory to the site, it can be set up with no assembly required."

Hydrogen Peroxide Powered Race Car

Posted October 14, 2009 6:00 AM by CarDomain

Using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to power vehicles is quickly catching on around drag strips located throughout the country. The high amount of power and relatively low cost of building a H2O2 rocket propelled vehicle make them very attractive. Sponsors love these vehicles because of the unique display and sound created upon releasing the thrust held within.

The H2O2 powered vehicle works on the basics similar to H2O2 rockets of WWII. There is a flood of hydrogen peroxide into a combustion chamber filled with silver or platinum screens that act as a catalyst. When they come into contact with this catalyst, a chemical reaction occurs releasing the energy out the back of the vehicle with major amounts of thrust.

The byproducts of H2O2 vehicles are only oxygen, and water because the chemical reaction effectively splits the extra oxygen molecule off of H2O resulting in thermal energy and thrust in a pollution free manner.

This car will be unveiled as a "concept" at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, but it's very close to the production vehicle that will hit showrooms in 2010. With styling that artfully mixes cues from the old CRX with the new Insight, this high-tech hybrid will be available with a six speed manual transmission, making it a green car that enthusiasts could love.
