Meet Mike Simcoe: Chevrolet's Director of Design

Posted January 22, 2010 12:01 AM by CarDomain

"There's no doubt about it, it's an amazing place. The history, the ghosts. You know you are somewhere special." That's how Mike Simcoe, Executive Director of Design for Chevrolet, describes working at GM Tech Center's design studios in Warren, MI.

Designed by Eero Saarinen at the height of the Atomic Age, the complex is an mid-century masterpiece and a place where design and style invade every view. It's the perfect place to lead a design renaissance from. Simcoe talked to about the new global design language for Chevrolet, and no, it does not specify two tail lights on every car.

I really like the finishing sentence of the blog " We have grown a lot in terms of making good cars." Please pick me of the floor... My mechanic had a eight year old GM Cobalt on the lift. I had a good look at the fully rusted underside of the car. You have grown, ? sure that's why the Prius came out, now more than 10 years ago, and you still don't have an answer. What a joker...... Can't make a car, can't cope with the new age and had to be bailed out, what else do I need to know.

When, and only when, Chevy can come up with a car that can 1-keep simple parts from falling off in your hand, 2-get the fuel mileage back up to where it was in the early 80's, and 3-Keep the unions out of the decision making process, will they start to earn the confidence of the people. I don't have anything against Chevy. I just think that our "Bailed-Out" companies from the past year and a half no longer have the drive to succeed they once had when they were actually competing with like companies. Why would they. The American spirit of being the best has gone to the wayside and the mentality of "Keep the welfare checks coming" has taken it's place. Let the markets determine the outcome of a company. Not the US Treasury. TCB ENT, KS

AH, That explains everything now.

They just focus on two design elements of every vehicle. Like the Chevy badge and the interior emblem. The rest of the vehicle is just an added on accessory that can fall off at any time with out greatly affecting the badges performance and what not.

Basically the vehicle is just a secondary accessory to the Badges and is thus not worth conserning them selves with its overal design or performance.

That explains so very much, just so very very much.

Go drive your Toyotas, just make sure your stuck gas pedal doesn't hurt you!

Sure but know that the product that caused the issue was American made.

Toyota worked on the design with CTS Corp., which supplied the pedals in the 2.3 million recalled vehicles.

What was Toyota thinking ....

So if you want to buy a Toyota make sure the VIN number starts with a J as this indicates a Japan made product that does not have the issue.

I drove Chevy's most of my life, but now own Fords. I still have a couple of '60's Chevy muscle cars in the shed but won't own a new one. In principle I'm upset about the whole Obama bail out thing with my tax dollars, but more importantly to me, new Chevy's are butt-ugly! Now I know who's responsible for that...

I'd hate to see bashing GM turn into a political rant- but I keep reading Right-wingers with selective memories repeating the lie that Obama was behind the auto bail-outs, when in fact GM came to the Feds for loans several times, long before he was inaugurated. GM has been in a death spiral since before "Roger and Me".

Your changed from GM to Ford...? I have a Ford and it has the same issue as the Cobalt.. rust everywhere. I think they even rust in the brochure, not kidding you. I was at an RV show where they showed the frame on which the RV will be built. RUST. Never driven one mile and basically only used to display the "great" product. RUST. When I pointed it out to the salesman he just brushed it off. Unfortunatelly RV's are not built on Japanese frames yet. Volvo has one though.
