Big Bang Abandoned In New Model of the Universe

Posted July 27, 2010 1:42 PM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

A new cosmology successfully explains the accelerating expansion of the universe without dark energy; but only if the universe has no beginning and no end. As one of the few astrophysical events that most people are familiar with, the Big Bang has a special place in our culture. And while there is scientific consensus that it is the best explanation for the origin of the Universe, the debate is far from closed. However, it's hard to find alternative models of the Universe without a beginning that are genuinely compelling.

I like this theory better than the big bang. There is room for both theories, though, if neither claims to be 100% complete.

Re: Big Bang Abandoned In New Model of the Universe

I have always been troubled by the concept of a singularity at the "beginning" of the universe, and by the concept of Dark Energy. Dark Energy reminds me of the old, discredited concept of the Aether. I am also bothered by the fact that the background microwave radiation is not uniform. I am partial to the original "steady state" model of the Universe favored by Einstein and Fred Hoyle...

One aspect of the apparent red shift that is generally ignored is the fact that one would have exactly the same effect if one were accelerating away from the rest of the universe- i.e., being sucked in to a Black Hole. In other words, the rest of the universe is not expanding- our neighborhood is contracting as we accelerate towards the Black Hole at the center of the Milky Way...That is a whole lot easier to accept than Dark Energy, in my mind.

Astronomers conveniently ignore the fact that they are observing from a very, very small region of space. It supposedly takes us about 225–250 million years circumnavigate the Milky Way, and we may very well find that the universe looks a lot different on the other side than it does on this side- or maybe not. The point is, we have been working with the new cosmology for less than 100 years...

Another aspect of the Big Bang theory that bothers me is that it seems 13.9 billion years is an awfully short time to build the universe up to its present size and complexity...

It's great to see others addressing these issues, although I need more detail about Professor Shu's proposed theory before I can say that I am more comfortable with his model than I am with the prevailing model...

Thank you CW for pointing out one of my previous beefs on this site. The popular conception of an expanding universe is a matter of perspective. I've previously argued, and JonMtKisco came to my defense, that perhaps space is not expanding but matter is actually shrinking (see "Age and Size of the Universe" on C4 from 2007).

John backed my drug-induced and addled rant and cited the redshift-theory work of Erhard Sholz as an early proponent of the concept.

The "Incredible Shrinking Mass" theory is back Jorrie!

Interesting CW.

How would it look from the other side?

Given the distances (alleged), and life time of stars (estimated) a sizable portion of the universe we see, is long gone.

And there is the problem. Is it a right to believe and spread nonsense? Is it not everyone elses right to correct the errors we see? In this day and age where one person's ignorance and misinformation is actually proving to be dangerous to another person, or where people are still dying in the debate over "my imaginary friend is bigger than your imaginary friend", is it not my DUTY to point out the holes in your belief every chance I get?

On a fourm dedicated to engineering and science, where a common question is "how can you prove that" and in a thread where the discussion is about a new cosmological theory and the "evidence" for and against it, you propose an unsupported fairy tale as a valid alternative? Don't expect to see it go unchallenged.

Your "opinions" are better suited for a religious fourm where there is no expectation of evidence or proof. In my opinion you got off lightly.

Sorry. I'm not a holly roller Jesus freak, I just have firm beliefs and standards that I don't push on other people but I do have a right to voice my opinions. Letting me off lightly makes no sense. I believe in exploring the universe and gaining all the knowledge about it we can, so why waist time trying to figure out how it begain? Why not focus on what it is and what is going on with it now? I am sorry you had to get on the defensif and attack me like a dominant buck in rut. That isn't what I was trying to do.

I realize that I probably woke uop on the wrong side of the bed yesterday and might have got off on the wrong foot, so for that I apologize. Now can we drop all the quaballing?

I think we should explore space and see where it takes us. Who knows in the future we may need to travel to distant planets to set up homestead some day, hopefully not in the near future though.

I too have a passion for astronomy and would like to go into space and learn all I could about it and find answers to alot of questions we all have. There are just some questions out there that we will more than likely never find the answers too.

Now that I understand a part of your PM I would wish that you refrain from commenting on my state of mind anonymously. That excludes comments you would like to make in public. Stop digging and seek council before you go any further. True friends help each other and you must have some left.

I think the book to which you reference creation occurred in 6 days. And, in reference to "days" how does this time frame work before Earth was created? Why isn't the first day equal 13 billion years in our current understanding of time frame?

This goes for modern time references as well. When the Earth is accepted as 4 billion years old anything beyond that loses its point of reference to measure a year.

I think time is more fungible than most people realize.

Also, IMHO, our divine connection is our capacity to ask those deep, and often unanswerable, questions.

Cheers

Dear Mr.Clean

I am happy to report to you that the people who wrote the book got it all wrong and the mistakes your are making, in trying to interpret my actions from way back then, by using this book, are hair raising. Yep, I still have some. In truth, and to get the story straight, it only took me 6 days and I clearly stated for you to rest on the seventh day.

The light, which had to come first, took up the whole first day. You know, it always bothered me that light only travels at a certain speed and only with minimal velocity, but what can I do? I set the rules and changing them mid stream would have been very time consuming. Remember, I had only 6 days to go.

Now to you and your blasphemous ways to interpret my actions and trying to make them part of your life. It seems you are building your house on sand and at the same time telling others, who try to build theirs on solid ground, that they are wrong to do so. You? A true believer? Rather trusting some written material and not my real message or your inner feelings?

You remind me of a war hero that claims benefits with out ever having been in action. That is what I meant when I called you blasphemous in an earlier post. You are holding up your colors and proclaiming to be part of a larger movement that gives you strength in numbers? I can see you now,...... reading out aloud what I am proclaiming here and looking up your tables of godlessness and un-spirituality to find solace in your actions. You will possibly even find passages but you shall not trust them by there words but by their deeds.

I was watching a snail yesterday, can't remember now when I created them, and this little creature, eating away at my veggies had more of me in it than many of the so called true believers. Although it was eating away at the plant and potentially lessening my dinner, I had to forgive it's sins. It needs not much and had me as its creator, so what could I do? Seconds later a Corrawong (Native crow) continued the chain of events and took it to snail heaven. Not very large, that heaven, but very slimy and don't they just love it.

You on the other hand take up a lot of breathing space and there is only so much available. In hind site I should have created a larger protective layer around this planet but what I give I can take away, just like that. Well, to be more specific, misguided and undereducated people like you will do that for me. I'll sit back and watch and wait until the day of reckoning. You do have an appointment, remember?

Dog and Drol are your inventions, nothing to do with me. Survive with your own creations if you think you can. In the end, to get to the point, I have no time for your self serving artificial creations. I am good at heart and wish that you would not believe in the false prophets. I can't even remember when I created those but I must have been of my guard for a moment.

A novel a day keeps the devil away. Good luck to you and the laughing (wincing?) crowd in the back ground. I am the messenger of peace and mercy and wish no harm whatsoever. You are doing that all by yourself and don't blame me when the awakening comes and you feel a bit out of place.

Sorry to the others contributing here, I am aware I am way out of line. I have therefor added some invisible stuff between the lines, hopefully to be enjoyed and taken with a grain of salt. I am as much as a snail or a dog or bird of pray and am only trying to make sense of all the parts moving in synchronicity or not. What ever comes first.

Have a great day and create at will, I'm done for now, Ky.

OK. I rushed to your defense the first time, because there really was nothing blasphemous in your original installment. Now you have crossed the line- there is only one way one can interpret your claim to having created a snail and false prophets (OK, I'll give you that one- it's easy creating false prophets- at least easier than creating false profits!). This is borderline blasphemy! Unless, of course, you are a snail, in which case, I will give you that one as well...

Never mind. I enjoy your rants!

Especially as you can accomplish all this without resorting to what would be euphemistically termed "blue" vocabulary!

It's OK. I get up at 3am and am working on a patent application since days now. These interludes refresh my sense of being and just help me get my head around the dry materiel. You know, it is all based on claims and counterclaims. Trust me, I have already set my starting blocks and are waiting for a "clean brake" or versions thereof. I'm polishing at the abstract so any little bit helps. My Attorney will rip it all to shreds in the end but at least I'll be able to take his phone calls and shoot off the top of my head.

I did like the esteemed bit though, Ky.

They'll show up on the notice board in snail heaven and will be covered in traces of slime in no time at all. No complaint from me and if he wants to keep it confidential I'll obey. Me mum told me to behave in that way and I'll trust her judgment on this. Every dog must have a mother like every light must have a source.

BTW, what does "Off ones Knocker" mean? Is it something one can sit on? Like a throne or something?

I agree that Dark Energy seems like a daft workaround. I've recently started to get very interested in cosmology - it's always nice to learn about your neighborhood - but so many simple things puzzle me. I'd love to pick someone's brain over it, but you'd be amazed how people's eyes roll when you start waving your hands around trying to demonstrate the electroweak epoch.

mrclean

Dear earthling.

By the time you meet me you will know how it has all ended, that is the only truism that I can find in your writings. BTW, nice and fat letters so that I could read it with out difficulty. You know, at my age things become a bit blurry at times. Good you didn't choose capitals.

Your knowledge of my boundless wisdom surprises me. I have not got you on my list, yet, and am surprised that you have this insider knowledge with out my consent, approval. I am looking forward to our meeting and the expression on your face when I tell you that the concept of trusting in me was just a cosmic joke. It is a standing joke around here you must know.

That others before you, who have written the good book you mentioned, never arrived here is a surprise to me. They must have met up with my second best friend instead. He loves high temperatures and every thing is incinerated in his presence. So it should be because its all hearsay. No, not heresy but close enough.

Your blasphemous behavior and needless trust in me will come to an end one day. I will only be able, when we finally meet, to give you the exact length of a piece of string (no, not the theory). You will be disappointed about how short it really is, or better was, because you will have no need to tie anything up were I am. Not even a soul that is lost in space.

Trust in Satan's promises, which are really mine and trust your instincts. You are on the path to getting here one day but don't be disappointed if I am out, doing the things that have to be done. I am a busy man (no, not gay or a woman). Just sit and wait till I get back, I promise I will be there.

Now, you rest assured my friend, delusion is a disease that is curable and it is a must, that, before you get here, you are a free of that virus. Treatment? Stop telling other people to see me and trust, believe, write books about me and worship me. I have no time (I never had) for such mundane hobbies. I am a busy man and wish not to be disturbed by exhibitionists who brag about being friends with me.

You surely remember my son, who visited you a while back. I could have saved him, but was too busy painting a picture of Mohamed. At least he could sit still and was a very patient model. I'll show you the portrait when you get here. I think it turned out really nice. He thought it was a bit too much "out there" so he refused to buy it. It is now a permanent fixture in my house. Yep, the one that is still being measured by some very smart people.

Ah, I forgot, before you make any travel plans make sure you get a life. Jumping the cue is a pet hate of mine. Gotta go now, have an inquiry from Albert. He is in strife because he is very disappointed, in him being misinterpreted and not fully understood. I'll be in touch.

Hope this helps.

I wish I could be of more help regarding the matter at hand. Sorry for complicating the issue but I could just not help myself.

Good luck, Ky.

I will agree that the universe is either expanding or our part of the universe is contracting or the universe is actually in a steady state and all the "evidence" results from misinterpretation of the laws of nature. Or, maybe, just maybe, the universe was created 5,000 years ago within a span of 6 days (with the concept of "day" being undefined for now). However, my limited understanding of all of the principles involved suggest to me that the "matter is shrinking" is the more tenable of the various theories at this point in time. To be revisited when (and if) the LHC is able to detect the Higgs boson...

So I guess my theory of the universe is on the back of a giant turtle (couldn't spell tortoise) is moot?

Not necessarily. If one thinks in terms of light cones, we only have access to information about the universe since the "initial event"- we have no way of knowing what lies outside that light cone. Let us hypothesize that a black hole collided with with a localized region on the back of your giant turtle 13.9 billion years ago- an event of sufficient magnitude to launch our particular light cone. We would have no way of detecting the turtle, or determining what happened to the turtle as a result of the event, because it is outside our particular light cone. However, we could probably associate the apparent expansion of the universe with the effects of the explosion resulting from the collision.

But, what happened to the turtle?

All this fuss - when all you have to do is scamper out ahead of the light and look back - colliding torti, really

An interesting theory, but not the first of it's kind. Stephen Hawking had something similar, but it may not have had all the support that this one seems to have. The title is very misleading. It makes it sound like everyone abandoned the BB, but it's just the people that believe in it. I never liked dark matter or dark energy, but there were not acceptable substitutes. This may be it. I have no problem with the speed of light changing over millenia. I always wondered if there was another explanation of the red shift. Looks like Shu has found it. Go for it Shu!

P.S. I missed the religious posts that were deleted, but can imagine what was said. I see no reason for this theory to rule out a creator.
