Corvette Rumor Watch: Small V8 Turbo for C7?

Posted June 04, 2011 7:00 AM by CarDomain

Have you heard the latest rumor that's buzzing out of thin air about the next-generation Corvette? Citing unspecified whistle-blowers such as "a very senior GM executive" and "several well-placed sources," The Detroit Bureau claims that the C7 will be getting a small-displacement, overhead-cam turbocharged V8 as an alternative the traditional big pushrod LS motor. It may be as petite as 3.0 liters, and it'll have teeny-bore cylinders with a long stroke like a Ferrari motor. It will likely rev high--like 10,000 RPM high - so it'll probably have that Euro-exotic yawr in place of the traditional muscle-car burble.

Consider that a travesty? Don't worry, the old-style big block will purportedly still be available in the new 'Vette if you want it. Probably the most-speculated-upon new car of this century, the C7 has weathered rumors of everything from a Stingray-style split window to a mid-engine layout with V6 power. And again with this alleged development, the push seems to be to appeal to Euro-oriented consumers. But I'll believe it when I see it. How about you?

"whistle-blowers"? I think this is out of context....

Does the new 'vette fit a bail of hay? A sheet of plywood? Can it haul a horse trailer? Can I even fit my longbow in it? Then, no thank you.

Hey there, I have the 25th anniversary "Vette". I almost bought a 63 split window years ago. I think this "Auto" is "Sexy-Errrr" than anything from across the pond. I also own a Lexus. I think the LFA is VERY incredible. I think Lexus has the tech and Chevy has the body style. Just like the Harley, If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand !!!

Well alrighty, then. The return of the FIERO!

Well i owned a Fiero, an 84 and it was an excellent car that filled a niche. GM could have taken that car to great heights if it wasent for all the bad press on the 4 cylinder engine (think an aluminum 3 liter DOHC,real corvette beater). Same for the Corvair.

There is almost always something in reports like this that strike me as odd. In this case it's, "3.0 liter. . .teeny bore. . .long stroke. . .Ferrari. . .10,000 RPM. . ."

Can someone please clue me in as to which Ferrari motor this describes? Most that I am aware of are big bore, short stroke naturally aspirated.

In my addled brain, a short stroke motor lends itself to high RPMs and anything that could be described as "long stroke" is more akin to the low revving, high torque stump pullers we used to enjoy here in the States.

So, I know it sounds like I'm splitting hairs here but, it really does make all the difference in the world. Someone please educate me. . .

Ferrari motor , Just a quick Google shows that these engines are oversquare. Greater bore than stroke.

OK where to start

The LS series V8 is not a "big block" it is in fact a gen4 small block. To the dismay of many the Gen4 design is nearly a copy of the small block ford V8. I know, I know. Just look at it ok then compare it to the old 351windsor. Visually they appear nearly identical. Bore spacing, no longer siamesed cylinders, exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, distributor placement, (when equipped with a Dist.), oil pan, water pump, etc. etc..

The stroke/bore statement is exactly backwards in regard to rpm's. My question is when GM has a winner (ZR-1) which uses the LS-9 version of the gen 4 engine why would they attempt to improve on a virtually unchallenged power plant. Ok, well GM has a long history of self immolation but the new Management seems to have learned the lesson of time. Don't improve it, sell it...

I drive Ford products as a result of working for GM for a mind numbing amount of time but race a 55Chevy Pro-Mod simply because I have it.
