Google Buys Motorola Mobility, Android Will Never Be the Same

Posted August 22, 2011 1:36 PM by dondingee

A lot of folks are still processing last week's headline that Google is acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5B.

There are a lot of angles to this, random thoughts:

Google needs a stable hardware platform to help control "fragmentation".

Google needs a patent portfolio to compete with the likes of Apple and Microsoft.

Samsung and HTC now have an interesting dilemma - do they compete with their operating system provider? Some folks are saying they have to look to alternatives. HTC, with their Beats deal, may suddenly be looking at webOS more closely. Samsung and their 19% share built on Android may have a big problem with this. HTC's Peter Chou said the right things:

We welcome the news of today's acquisition, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem.

There was obviously some disappointment between Samsung and Google over the Nexus S, but as some have pointed out that might have more to do with the channel - who the carriers were - than the technology.

Speaking of carriers - this sets up Verizon in an interesting way.

It gets even more interesting. HP is dumping webos.

I didn't have any particular foresight but I'm sure glad I bought a Motorola Xoom.

Yes HP dumped the touchpad/webOS after 4 days of its release in Australia...but a few days later Harvey Norman (chain store) sold the 16Gb for $98 and the 32Gb for $148..it sold within 15 minutes nationally.

I have a Nexus S...there was a issue? Now I have to find out.
