Don't fence me in

From The Engineer:

A virtual fence for livestock that enables the animals to be confined without using fixed fences is being developed by the CSIRO in Australia. A virtual fence for livestock that enables the animals to be confined without using fixed fences is being developed by the CSIRO in Australia. At this stage in the development of what is designed to be a commercial product, the research team has developed a prototype system and successfully demonstrated its use on a herd of cattle. CSIRO's Dr Andrew Fisher said the system works in a similar way to a conventional electric fence for livestock, except that the fence is invisible. 'The boundaries are drawn entirely by GPS and exist only as a line on a computer,' Dr Fisher said. 'There are no wires or fixed transmitters used at all. Importantly, what we're developing, achieves the same result as a conventional fence but without the need for posts and wire.'

For those interested, the cane toads are useful, refer here:

http://www.krappy.com/product.asp?cID=0&pID=31&c=22165

Those wretched toxic cane toads are expanding their territory at a rate of some 20kM per year.

At that rate, it's not going to be long before the land of Oz is over-run with them.

Unless some bright researcher manages a way to fit them all with those collars.....

" Will it work on Mexicans??"

Sure will! Why not?

Only one small problem is getting the reluctant subjects to hold still while you securely attach the receiver and replace the battery periodically.

It is so lame, it is downright funny: engineering solution for nonexisting problems guided by well meaning fools. I have not been to Australia, but know, that the problem of the ranchers is not so much to keep livestock in, but mainly to keep wildlife out. Who will grab hold of every kangaroo, dingo, toad or the best: saltwater crocodile to put on a collar?!? An aside: this is a weaker version of the invisible fence you can buy for your dog. It is also known to fail, when a strong willed animal takes the punishment, and goes thru it to go after the postman.

But it it worthy to be enshrined as an urban legend.

Seriously: A major problem in engineering it to find out what the customer really needs instead what their or your sales department said it wants.

PETA might prefer playing music to livestock that dingos and crocs can't tolerate.

THIS IS GREAT ANOTHER THING THEY COULD ADD IS THE MOVING THE CATTLE TO ANOTHER GRZING FIELD ALL BY A COMPUTER JUST OPEN A GAP IN IT AND CLOSE THE PERIMETERS BEHIND IT AND SO THE CATTLE WEAR A TAG THAT MAKES THEM GO TOWARD THE GAP AND IT WILL SEND THEM TO OTHER GRAZING FIELDS WITH OUT EVEN A DOG FOR RUNNING THEM OR MABY ALSO SENDS THE TO THE MILK BARN FOR MILKING THEN TO THE FEED LOT AND ALLOWS THEM TO EAT ONLY WHAT YOU SUPPLY THEM. AND EVEN GO FURTHER THAN THAT HAVE ANOTHER COMPUTER CHIP THAT TELLS YOU WEATHER THERE MILK IS HEALTHY FOR THE CONSUMPTION IF NOT IT WILL TELL YOU WHAT DIET TO PUT THEM ON .

WHEN I WAS A KID I HELPED MILKED 300 HEAD OF MILK COWS AND HAD TO BE THE ONE THAT WENT TO RUN COWS IN FROM PASTURE 3.00 AM PRETTY TIRING FOR A KID AT 10 YRS. OLD.

SOUNDS GREAT

Have you ever tried to drive cattle into a Texas panhandle blizzard. They will travel with the storm bunch up at a fence line and eventually push through it or even over it on down cattle. pardon the pun, but i put no stock in vertual fence stoppin' a herd of cattle goin' when they want to go!

I'm not much on fences, but i'm very sure such a line of investigation is ongoing for the use of just such uses to track human beings and corral Probationers and even alcoholic to tell where they were at any time...lo and behold, the elderly and those who choose to wonder..Then if you had enough land and tagged your animals it would save in time and money for a true count and direction to go for a roundup. Maybe not intersting to the small cattle operation at the moment but to the man with 30,000 acres and 2 or more herds it would save labor...just a thought...Jim
