All-Solid Lithium Sulfur Battery Stores Four Times as Much Energy as Lithium Ion Batteries

Researchers at the DoE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed a lithium sulfur battery that is not only cheaper and safer than lithium ion batteries, but it can store four times as much energy as its li-ion counterparts. Used in small electronics and electric vehicles, lithium ion batteries are a standard for energy storage, but lithium sulfur batteriesâ€"which are already used in some solar aircraftâ€"have the potential to succeed as an alternative with much higher energy density - and ORNL's all-solid Li-S batteries are testing as safer and more durable than current Li-ion's.

Hmm. Now if I remember my EV battery history correctly....

At one time we had large heavy lead acid based batteries that had limited driving ranges.

Then we developed NiCad and NiMH batteries that had 2x the power per unit of volume and mass than a lead acid did. However instead of EV's going twice as far they all got batteries that were half the size of the old lead acids so no gain in driving distance was had.

After those we had the Lithium based battery tech come about that had roughly 10X more energy per unit of mass and volume over lead acid yet once again the EV's didn't get any substantial gains either. Instead the batteries were made 5X smaller still and twice as much useless electronics was added to the vehicles.

Now we have another battery tech coming along that promises 4x gains over over the lithium based systems. Me thinks that in the end these LiS will be half the size of the last battery type and twice as much additional electronics and convenience crap will be added to the EV's leaving them in the end with the same dismal performance and ranges that the old lead acid design gave at some 20X less energy capacity per unit of volume and mass.

Somehow in the end methinks its not the battery energy density that is the problem with EV tech. The problem is with the pinheads who design them.

At last a battery without ions!!

When you hear "lithium ion" you could get the wrong idea that a battery is an electrochemical system.

From wiki: "The three primary functional components of a lithium-ion battery are the anode (negative), cathode (positive) and electrolyte. Generally, the anode of a conventional lithium-ion cell is made from carbon. The positive electrode is a metal oxide, and the electrolyte is a lithium salt in an organic solvent. The electrochemical roles of the electrodes reverse between anode and cathode, depending on the direction of current flow through the cell."

Me always thunkeded that they WERE ... "an electrochemical system"...

If'n they tweren't , wouldn't they not be more of a capacitator...? (sic)

back inthe 1950's, ads said you could get your transistor radio running 100 hours with standard batteries vs. 400 hours with mercury batteries. Then Hg started to be a bad word so first thing the name was changed to "alkaline batteries". Then as it was cadmium's time, first measure was to change battery label color to green (as opposed to "cadmium red"). Batteries were made to be really Hg- and Cd-free later on.

For a battery name to turn into a buzzword, it must be made up of 3 nouns as in "lithium sulfur battery". This is why the new lithium generation had to be called a "lithium ion battery",as if the older generation of "lithium batteries" could work without ions. As you point out, there is no way a battery will work without ions, because they are all electrochemical systems. Not so with real capacitors... supercapacitors are a little different!

Rumor has it they have came up with a new ultra super battery that will allow a single battery the size of common D cell to power a full sized sedan 450 miles at 65 MPH on a single charge.

Rumor has it the new EV's will now all be refitted with a AAA equivalent of the new ultra super battery, a 5000 watt sound system, full time all wheel drive, all electric heating and AC, power steering, and daytime running lights giving them an average driving range of around 40 - 60 miles on a charge.

(You just know they would do that don't you?)
