What Kind of Robot Would Work for You?

Posted December 15, 2007 7:56 AM

Robots may not be taking over the world yet, but they are increasingly being implemented for manufacturing, assembly, material handling, surgery — and you name it. If it was up to you, what type of robotics do you think would be of great use to your employer? Why? Caution: Think before putting this idea into the suggestion box at work.

Secondly, there are robotic vacuum cleaners, follow-you-around PCs, musicians, cocktail servers, mowers, and a lot more. What kind of robot would you choose to assist you at home? Why?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Fastening, Joining & Assembly, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Fastening, Joining & Assembly today.

You know, I can visualize that someday soon, there will be robotic arms that could assemble a whole house(exterior to start with) w/minimal human help.

I'm holding out for the robot girlfriend. Trust me, there will be a day. My greatest fear is that it will come too late for me. I've had plenty of human girlfriends mind you, but I would definitely be game to ascribe to "The Church of Appliantology"*. I'm sure like everything else there would be tradeoffs but how bad could it be?

Many of you know me well enough by now to know we have had our dealings with cancer just too many times.

Due to this, and I am aware this is personal, I would like to nominate the da Vinci 'S' as my robot of choice. I wish every person on this world can get access to something like this when they need it.

Other than these difficult procedures that could go wrong when humans do them, what would you not like to do yourself that you would need a robot for? We already live in a time where time is getting thinner on the ground due to longer working hours and such. Having a robot perform a task you simply don't like or cannot do for time shortage is just decadence, isn't it? I would not want one for the home, ever!

A power hammer in my blacksmith shop that knows how to hammer, what angles to hammer at, how to draw metal, will react to different temperatures in the metal instantly to adjust for the next blow, and will know not to hit my thumb.

Hmmm...It will be a long time.

I want one that can remove ice and snow, especially snow packed on and around obstacles such that a snowblower can't get it.

Good idea. Maybe something that would melt the ice and snow rather than mechanically move it. Give the robot some sort of infrared/laser/radar imaging sensors and fit it with some kind of melting tool. I thought a propane torch at first, but what about a microwave gun? Microwaves can very effectively heat up water, and wouldn't melt plastics or burn other materials as easily. This could be a second function of that automatic lawn mower, to give it some wintertime use.

I found it's more popular to use the Robot Vacuum Cleaners to clean our house instead of doing that by ourselves in China, especially in Shanghai, although other countries have already used these machines for many years. It will be a trend to the future and I found some Shanghai companies realize this trend and try to develop the huge market of China:
