Some say the value proposition of digital fieldbus in process automation is difficult to see. Originally it was supposed to be a way to make big savings on wiring costs. But according to Peter Welander of Control Engineering, the savings can quickly be eaten up by wiring devices, terminators, more expensive instrumentation transmitters, and so on. Except for new plants, adoption has been slow.
