MPs to vote on hybrid embryo laws

Posted May 19, 2008 8:59 AM

From BBC News | Science/Nature | UK Edition:

MPs are voting later on whether to allow scientists to continue to carry out controversial stem cell research using hybrid human-animal embryos. Gordon Brown has urged MPs to back the work, saying it is a "moral endeavour" that could save thousands of lives. Scientists say it could lead to disease treatments, but critics argue that mixing human and animal tissue tampers with nature and is immoral.

I'm not an genetic specialist at all, but I try to be informed about this matters as they imply serious problems about the foolish future wherein the human race seems to go.

It's nothing strange that politicians have few, if any, scientific knowledge but I cannot understand the position of some scientists that don't want to see reality and prefer to stand on its high throne, sacrificing anything to their intended goals without taking into consideration the moral aspects.

It's a fact that actual research has demonstrated that cells coming from adult humans can be reprogrammed to become stem cells. Just see some works:

  • In July 2003, Dr.John Gurdon of Cambridge University (UK) demonstrated that gen called Oct-4 can be activated in adult cells. This allow to presume that adult cells could be reprogrammed to become "stem cells". From this very moment, it was clear to me what I was right when I discussed with those who propose to research with human embryos when I argued that no physical (or chemical) law was against the possibility of developing other technologies to the same end.
  • Last November, by different methods, Dr. Thompson of Wisconsin-Madison University and Dr. Yamanaka of Kyoto University, have reprogrammed skin cells (among other) to become stem cells able to produce any human tissue. It's helpful to remember that Dr. Thompson was the first in publishing the omni-potentiality of embryos stem cells in 1998.
  • This research results have change the methodology of Dr. Ian Wilmut, the "father" of Dolly sheep who have declared that this new approach is "hundred times more interesting"

When one see this facts, and taking into account that no general scientific agreement have been achieved regarding when the human life begins, it seems nonsense to continue the research using human embryos.

The only justification to do it is the insane pride of some "scientists" to achieve some goals as soon as possible at any cost. And I think: Is this really SCIENCE?

Best regards

The best argument against this sort of thing, is the quote from "Paul of Belfast":

<"There are ethical alternatives to what is, in effect, creating a Frankenstein hybrid">

Kind Regards....

"Catwoman", "Batman", "Dog-soldier", but for real!!! I don't agree with doing this. Also embryonic stem cell research has not some up with any positive results, when other types of stem cells have yielded results. I suspect that these scientists have no respect for human life, support abortion and would be a Dr Mengele type if they could get away with it. All in the name of "Science".

Gordo Brown has placed his support behind an "immoral endeavour" like the Leftist lackey that he is.
