Carbon Caps: Necessary or Needless

Posted May 31, 2008 8:12 AM

Governments around the world are proposing carbon limits for manufacturing and energy production. That most certainly will increase the cost for power. But, countries that pay more for electricity as a result of lacking resources, taxation rates, etc., are not necessarily less competitive. Just look to the Emerald Isle for that. But will carbon caps, or taxing companies based on how much carbon dioxide they produce, really help the environment? Or will it simply create a new level of regulation and a speculative trading market?

Make sure we put carbon limits on all those pesky humans occupying space and consuming oxygen. Plus don't forget about that other greenhouse gas emission, methane.

Hmm, that brings up the interesting question of whether to consider population in a nations carbon footprint. How much carbon dioxide does a typical human generate daily. Could you get carbon credits for energy production by offsetting with a smaller population density, and population controls? How many people are equivalent to one car typically. So if we have 10 fewer people per square mile would this be the same as one SUV?

Absolute stupidity and a political power grab. Higher costs for power will depress an economy or at least make it less competitive and it makes no difference whether it is by lack of resources or excessive taxation. If the taxes were used to plant trees and nothing else, then it might help, but those bloody politicians can't keep their hands off it if they can use it in ways that will buy them votes. Trading caps only makes the brokers rich and could be damaging to the economy by over-speculation.

Next they will want to tax a person for breathing and emitting CO2 [about 2.5 lbs per day]. What about those who can't pay the breathing tax? Why, to "Save the Planet" they must be stopped from breathing!! And it will be done without a twinge of conscience, no guilt, because it will "Save the Planet". A far-fetched idea perhaps, but it does carry the attitude to its logical extreme of illogic.

Suppose I were used to throwing 10 pounds of trash out the car window each month and someone suggested that the total trash piling up alongside the highways was somehow damaging the environment. Then someone suggests that in order to clean up the environment we put a cap on the crap we can toss. Let's say that we cap it at 5 pounds per month. So if I want to keep throwing the same 10 pounds each month I would find two people who only throw a couple of pounds a month and buy credits from them.

Now everyone is happy ?

What the @#$%^&*? If we are polluting the place, then let's all work on reducing our part of the pollution. Cap and Trade has got to be the biggest crock of @#$%^&* politicians have come up with in a veeeerrrrry long time.

"Follow the money trail" Where does the money come from and where does it go? It's so easy to find the answer to that last question.

One other comment, If what I have been throwing out the car window is clean fertilyzer, then would it be polluting the earth? Or would it help the plants roadside to grow bigger and greener? (This whole thing is very controversial, and we don't all see it from the same viewpoint. This is just one viewing angle)

Techart - But CO2 is not a pollutant. It is a non-poisonous, odorless gas which you emit when you breathe [about 2.5 lbs per day] and which is taken in by plants which release the O back into the air so you can continue to breathe. The CO2 in your body and in the air helps regulate your breathing. Without it all plants and people would die. It is not trash.

There is a lot of trash being dumped into the air and that should be reduced.

The cap and trade system is a scheme to make some people rich, give more power to the politicians and pull more money out of our pockets

That is the angle I see it from.

Then the Federal Government past a law saying anything that could be thrown away from fast food to gum wrappers degrade within 2 years in the enviorment.

It never enforced that we can see.

An attorney rolls a stop sign and a cop pulls him over. The attorney decides to test the cops comprehension and asks the cop to explain the difference. Cop whips out baton and proceeds to beat the attorney while yelling, Do you want me to stop or just slow down!

Seems to me a waste of time without Independent Testing and huge fines. Cheating is always going to happen and with the local EPA's so under staffed and untrained in testing how would anyone ever know?

More effort should be put into finding out if there really is a problem and if there is, what it's source is before employing a "solution" to an incompletely defined problem.

Fierce Allegiance,

Good Answer, absolutely true, and the effort to find out should be done by engineers and scientists, NOT Politicians. Also the men and women doing the research should not have their future employment dependant upon politically desired results.

Then, and only then will we know the real facts.

The EPA has the answers but the Politicans refuse to let those answers out to the people.

We need a independent group to Publish ALL EPA RESEARCH without any restraints.

The politicans want the EPA to know so the politicans can proptect their familys.

Remember the politican who called about what shot they needed to travel to New Orelans? They know what aganecies to call to protect themselves from all kinds of things included diseases.

First let me provide some history. I am closer to 50 years old than 40. When I was in high school, the big topic was the next ice age. It would be here in 50 to 100 years. Now some 30 years later, it is global warming. The politicians and (for lack of a better word) tree huggers have an agenda. That agenda is to scare the public with some outrageous idea that HAS NOT BEEN PROOVEN or even remotely supported by fact. I DO care about the environment. I also care about truth. Lets get down to the truth of the matter with tests and facts before we go jumping into something that we cannot fix.

Problem Solver: I agree completely with what you say. I also believe that almost all reasonable people care about the environment and want to do what is right. I also believe that most reasonable people are doing their best to preserve and protect the environment, natural resources, etc. They just quietly do it. It appears that the loudest voices are the worst polluters and absolute hypocrites. They demand that we do what they are unwilling to do. (As long as they gain wealth from the ordinary people). I can't help but wonder how long this can continue till the workers of the world can no longer sustain the increased workload.

A GA to ya! I think there's climate change happening, but I don't know. Before we do anything irreversible, we need to find out the facts.
