Using Technology, or Does It Use You?

Posted November 05, 2008 8:41 AM

Ask a Chinese manufacturer about enterprise planning software and they'll laugh and walk away. The combination of automation with massive software programs that track every aspect of a business operations is often seen as money sink — even outside of China. But is that because the technology doesn't work, or because the easiest part about improving operations is writing a check? Implementing the latest manufacturing advances requires a dedication at all levels if it is to succeed. Does your company have what it takes to climb the technology ladder to greater manufacturing success?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plant & Facilities Engineering, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plant & Facilities Engineering today.

I have been in Alternative Energy since 1980.

Why is it that the American People cannot appreciate the "free" energy from the heavens. That is, Solar Energy?

We manufactured over 300 solar thermal hydronic collectors in our driveway in 1980 and many are still "cranking out "free energy".

I bought Duncan's Solar Energy Roll Shutters, Inc. in 1992, and again have been manufacturing and installing Solar Collection Systems since then. We recently worked with an Army Engineer for a HVAC retofit, at Barracks at Fort Bliss, Texas and discovered that design calculations yield a 50 % reduction in HVAC cooling equipment due to rejecting solar heat loads on windows by installing rolling shutters (shading effect)..

Do we use technology? It depends on the ability of people to think, and to do what they should. I have learned that people will change to solar, if and only if, the cost of other energy forms becomes more expensive.
