New Waterproof Nanotech Material Which Remains Dry Even When Submerged

Posted November 25, 2008 9:17 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Chemists from the University of Zurich have developed a new fabric that never gets wet, not even when completely submerged in water for two months. The fabric is made of polyester fibers that are covered in a layer of 40-nanometer-wide silicone nanofilaments. The nanofilaments are spiky and this causes the water to sit in a sphere above the fabric, while a permanent pocket of air is protected below.

should have some insulating value as well, maybe for wet suits.

did'nt really say whether the properties change when the fabric is moved or flexed

(breaking the surface tension of the water)

What happens when you need to wash it?

When you need to wash it, maybe get it "dry cleaned"?

Anyone remember "The Man in the White Suit"? Sounds like it's getting closer every day.

Could be used for a hat during the monsoon rains, but I shall prefer my Australian-made Akubra hat

The main trouble with nano-filaments is when the fibres break, and they never decompose in nature.

There are many who are very concerned about the pollution by nano-particles.

Long-term damage is going to be far worse than all the asbestos, brake-dust, fibreglass combined.

Kind Regards....

Would you please tell me the inside scoop on Nanotech fibers... where do you find this information, if you can send me your sources, I would greatly appreciate it. I have an interest in Nano Sand blasters... how can you find my resources if you could help me?

Hello Sean_rashti

Refer:

http://www.napier.ac.uk/fhlss/ARCHES/biomedsports/Pages/Pollution.aspx

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6VB5-4N977KS-1&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=86f6627482f4024ce82d501bd1384edc

http://www.environmental-expert.com/resultEachPressRelease.aspx?cid=8819&codi=38771&idproducttype=8&level=0

Those should get you started.

Enter into an Internet Search Engine the words: nano particles pollution

Check out the results, and your personal knowledge base should increase.

The problem with nanoparticles is not when they are actually formed into something, but when that formed article is damaged, rots, splits or breaks, and thus nanoparticles "get loose in the environment".

Because they are extremely small, interference with natural biological processes may interrupt or damage those natural biological processes.

As is usual, most of the inventors/developers of a new product or idea often do not think of the long-term consequences of their development, invention or idea, because they are interested in promoting their development or idea, no doubt hoping for a financial return.

Kind Regards....

Thank you Sparky. I really appreciate you starting me on a scaled footing. I would love to hear from you regarding nano-particle and any new information about this lucrative science with unknown pollution factor. What are your expertise besides knowledge about nano-particles. Please forgive me in advance for asking a personal question. I thought you may be able to answer some of my other questions based on your background.

Kind regards,

Sean
