Is Real-time Production Visibility Possible?

Posted May 01, 2009 9:08 AM

Information technology has been the driving force behind the 1-3% productivity gains in the U.S. during the past several years. When combined with lean and just-in-time manufacturing practices, one would expect more productivity gains through limited inventories, better scheduling, etc. The question for the day is: Even if it is possible to get real time production data from machines on the plant floor to front office ERP, SCM, and MES software programs, is management ready or able to use that data to the company's benefit?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plant & Facilities Engineering, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plant & Facilities Engineering today.

Probably not...

I believe properly trained mid-level managers would be able to utilize the data but senior-level would not. My experience tells me the C-level folks rarely venture below the '20,000 foot level' of management where the data would be most applicable.

The data generated would be more 'micro-economic' than 'macro-economic'.

Of course there are exceptions, GE comes to mind where the complete Six Sigma and Lean mentalities were instilled in every employee from top to bottom.
