"Off-Topic"Thread Chain

10/22/2007 6:24 PM

I speculate here: If I would flag this first post up-ahead as "Off-Topic" then any further post in this thread is automatically flagged as such.

Can a whole thread be "Off-Topic" to itself?

Here we Go. I Just Flagged the first one.

What do you think should be considered "On Topic", and what should be considered "Off topic" to this very thread?

Just before pressing that button:

- What would you consider "Off-Topic" to a thread about "Off-Topic" items?

- Is there a limit to this oxymoron, and if there is, what is it?

- Can something be considered "Off-Topic" in regard to itself?

- - - -

Not to mention this:

- - - -

What's going on here?

Hey good trick, more comments than views.

as sterling stan pointed out on another thread, any thread that's not about engineering could be considered off topic. Actually the thread @ th bottom of the screen shot is more nearly off topic.

Contrary to others opinions, there is certainly a place for philosophical, political & artistic discussions here!

There is no higher form of art, than a well executed design. Form & function married in timeless execution.

..any thread that's not about engineering could be considered off topic

What about the "Science" bit ? I doubt everyone would agree as to what can be included in each term anyway. Hey, were also in the bit labelled "General Discussion". Unless that means Military General it seems fairly wide open.

I just like getting the "thank you.." when I post myself 'Off-Topic'.

Is this post off-topic? What is the topic? What is a topic? Why am I asking questions? Will I ever stop? Will anyone ever answer? Can anyone answer? What will they say? What can they say? A flag is just that. And the respondent can remark as on-topic. Isn't the only way to ensure that all comments are actually off-topic to have a topic for which no relevant answers are possible - but as regards CR4, that's beyond me at the moment (a possible example might be the character of god at an atheist conference?)

Just some observations...

Engineering is often the application of science and math to provide pracitcal solutions to problems. Or at least that's what it should be.

Engineers, scientists, and mathmeticians are people, complete with emotions, feelings, desires, interests, and, as is abundantly clear on many posts on CR4, foibles. To keep these out of CR4 would reduce us to mere extension of the souless computers that we use to access this site.

To the person that said non-engineering posts and threads don't belong here, let me ask you: what motivated you to get into engineering? Wasn't it your interest, your curiosity, your fascination with how things work that drew you in? Doesn't that reflect your humanity?

(( Now stepping down from soapbox to check out the latest on the Stormtrack forums.))

I have since becoming enthralled with GlobalSpec and CR4 asked if the Administrators would add a Polictical Science Section since the affects of engineering and science are felt in our daily lives, though in a discussion the ramifications of an idea may seem off topic if addressed on that score.

I appreciate it that the Administrators of Global Spec and CR4 have made distinctions and seem to facilitate with those distinctions an Aristotellian process.

Who better to have logical discourse on the most important of all discussions?

The Off-Topic Thread is alligned with my request of the administators of a Political Science Section which I have indicated to be a product of thought about the thing, beyond the thing, and topic inspired.

I said that it is good to know how to categorize what you are thinking about.

From this Off Topic question I would appreciate the outcome to be a category: Political Science.

The answer to the question: Can a whole thread be off topic to itself? Is: Yes and No, but mostly No, since a question does have an answer, which may be yes or no, right or wrong, or possible or impossible.

It is a genus who can answer every question in the wrong way, since it would indicate they know all the right answers but refuse to answer questions to please you.
