The costs involved in installing an antenna system mostly consist of the mast and the labour involved in errecting.

Home made ones usually disintigrate pretty quickly so it is more economical to use a proffesionaly manufactured one which may well last twenty years.

Forget Uda/Yagi design- if you can experiment, you may make far better antenna- I have. This antenna pulls in vhf &uhf tv better than commercial designs(Ihave compared)- it is about 12" long, uses 6 copper wires, is mounted outdoors, uses balanced 300 ohm cable, terminated in balun. I call the design RED ANTLER, as it is red in colour- & receives signals from 25km(local) to distant(70km). Another plus is that it receives digital transmissions in perfect order(which is why I made it initially, to receive stable signal- but it also works as I have said on analogue vhf/uhf- when all theory says it shouldn't!). The previous antenna I invented I called the Stalaphase- this pulled in analogue vhf/uhf better than any commercial design, but had signal dropout on digital- the Red Antler receives all perfectly!.

Well? Don't keep us in suspense. How did you built it? Or did you merely post your comment to boast, not to contribute to an answer?

Sounds good, are you going to show us your design? Thanks in advance!

Just describe what exactly what is your purpose regarding locations , frequencies available for transreciever , interferance limits in your region ......

For experimental purposes you can build a simple flat Yagi. Take a proper size plastic sheet and some aluminum or copper foil, cut the reflector, directors and the dipole from the foil and tape them to the sheet.

Are you offering a post on how to do this? Or were you wanting to know from us? If the last one, you wrote a question, then it needs a question mark (?) to make that completely clear!!!

What frequencies?

What gain?

What bandwidth?

What beamwidth?

What front / back ratio?

A yagi antenna for 2.4 GHz is going to use totally different manufacturing techniques from the same antenna scaled to 7MHz.

Design it on the computer. There are several software packages out there... some for free. Yagimax comes to mind.

Buy a copy of the ARRL antenna book. Sold at electronic stores in the US, or try www.arrl.org on line. This book comes with a yagi design program, although I haven't used it. It also has antenna designs right down to the aluminum for construction techniques.

Yagi antenna has one driven element for inserting feed, one reflector for reflecting signals and one or more directors. So, the yagi-uda antenna is an array of one driven element (or active elements where the power from the transmitter is fed or which feeds received power to the receiver) and one or more parasitic elements (which are not connected directly to the transmission line but electrically coupled).

The length of driven element is λ/2 or 0.5λ

The length of reflector is 0.55λ

The length of directors is 0.45λ or less.
