Total Years of Experience on CR4

11/28/2007 8:44 AM

Anyone care to have a guess at the total person-years of engineering experience represented by the CR4 membership?

My stab is somewhere between 25,000 and 100,000.

Quite a thought.

JohnDG:

My guess is even your higher number of 100,000 is probably low. Not very scientific but I took a quick look at total membership (100 members/page x 115 pages) = 11,500. Thus, 100,000 would result in an average of 8.7 years engineering experience per member. Seems low to me but maybe I'm biased by my almost 48 years engineering experience (I was a child prodigy).

Take your point - I've got 32 years (not counting education), I've just allowed for a fair proportion of young'uns.

Would be interesting to know.

Ah, is that just you?

It must be much more than that ... if you include the experience and wisdom handed down in books, by parents, by teachers etc.

Once Caxton got involved....

Plenty of stuff I've done has been heavilly influenced by books, couldn't have made my longbow with out 'em.

I'd guess at least 500-1000 years each.

I know we had a favourite book thread a while back...maybe 'best technical book'?

My two.

Mullard Transistor Audio Circuits.

Hunting With the Bow and Arrow.

Yea but, no but, I'm talking personal here, not the sum total of human experience.

My ex. kinda said this earlier this evening - books 'n' stuff. But I'm just talking first-hand, hands-on immediacy.

(Sorry - I was going to explain myself better, but Small interrupted).

Thanks, mate - it is a bit demoralizing when you spend hours thinking something through, then pour your heart & soul into starting an amazingly deep and insightful thread, and it all dries up .

Viagra!

What CR4 needs to do is submit one question per week and the brain bank submits solutions. I wonder what would happen if industry monitored the answers.

For the total membership of CR4, I would suspect the total years of engineering experience is over 350,000
