Hall of Fame for CR4

12/02/2007 3:48 PM

As we wree talking in the funny translations blog, Andy Germany called for a new thread called the hall of fame.

The idea is that you forward something that another person has said in a thread here on CR4 that you consider worthy of this hall of fame.

I propose certain catagories such as funny, seriously helpful, bestest best answerand of course dumb.

I would like to point out that this should not become a flaming or mudslinging contest, we like to keep it tidy here.

First one I would like to put forward is ducon, he stated the following:

Whenever undertaking erection of utility pipeline systems in a totally new factory with plants from different countries, we have about 2-3 foreign erectors and commissioning engineers coming from Germany, USA, England,Japan,Italy,Korea etc., each for their machines. At time it totals 14-20 of them and we are involved with all of them since everybody needs some part of steam, air, condensate, water, thermo oil etc., for their machine(s).

My boys (Welders, Fabricators, helpers) on speak urdu or punjabi and cannot speak a word english to communicate hence, I was required round-the-clock. I came up with a novel idea to make everyone in my team to speak english with anybody.

I told them to add "ing" after every urdu word and use hand expression and anybody will understand. Kha = eat. Kha-ing with hand expression is understood. Ja = go. Ja-ing with a walking away is understood. La= bring. La-ing, Kar = do. Kar-ing = doing.

With time these boys have expertised to an extend that it amazes me that they are in conversation with these erectors during breaks.

This resulted in me honouring him with a new word named after him duconing which means: <make anything understood by anybody anywhere at all times>

If you have something in this fashion we would like to see it here in our CR4 hall of fame.

If you don't like it blame Andy, it was his idea.

A CR4 Hall of Fame? Great idea!

Nominate someone? No problem!

I nominate to CR4's Hall of Fame our very own Relativist/Cosmologist/Physics Guru and General All-Around Good Guy, the esteemed Mr. Jorrie of South Africa.

Why Jorrie? Why not Jorrie! It's readily apparent to anyone who reads his posts, threads and blogs that Jorrie knows his stuff. He does his homework. Better yet, Jorrie freely shares his knowledge with others and obviously enjoys doing so.

Jorrie's a gifted, natural teacher who takes difficult concepts and takes the time to make them accessible even to non-specialists. Not many people have this gift (which, of course, makes it all the more precious). "Where love and skill combine, expect a masterpiece"

When Jorrie makes a mistake, he admits it.

Most important of all, Jorrie is patient and kind and nearly always manages to maintain a rock-steady demeanor toward his readers no matter what. This aspect of Jorrie's character has made the greatest impression on me by far. For example, in a couple of my very early posts I behaved quite badly toward Jorrie. To my considerable surprise, he did not reply in kind. Nevertheless he put me in my place, but without a hint of malice. I was thunderstruck! "For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." (Matt 12:34) Jorrie has a good heart.

I can't think of a more deserving guy, actually, and so it gives me great pleasure to nominate Jorrie to CR4's Hall of Fame!

How about calling this particular hall of fame The Best and Worst of CR4? When I think of a Hall of Fame, (say) a sports hall of fame, I think of glowing accounts of players' careers, career highlights, pictures, trophies and other awards, and maybe Notable Quotes (Yogi Berra and Muhammad Ali come to mind). I wouldn't expect to find Notable Quotes as the hall's centerpiece. Not in a Hall of Fame.

What say ye? Yes? No? Eu, take a hike?

Give me a vote for Jorrie too. I like the title of: "Smart guys who could be doing something else besides educating my dumb*ss but politely do it anyway!"

I'd be out of space if I tried to list some of ther great posts by vermin. Humour, insight, knowledge, tact. You name it and vermin's seems to do it. One of the classics is right here http://cr4.globalspec.com/comment/87123/Re-Breaking-the-Speed-of-Light

Excellent nomination by Mr europium, himself a model of nice internet behaviour. Hey, there are an awful lot of nice folk on CR4. This list could get big. How about all them nice people who run the thing. Huge round of applause to all of you.

( Can I have that date now vermin?)

Thanks and an honour to be the first one in the CR4 hall of fame as "duconing"

Back in 1984 when I came up with the name "Ducon" people asked me the meaning and I said 3 as:

1 . Ducon = Duja Consulatants

2 . Ducon = Duja Contractors

and 3. If I cannot get the job as 1 & 2 then I'll "con" the guy atleast.

Maybe Ducon lives in a condominium ! I nearly got slapped bad once when an elder lady asked for the condiments. My surprised (genuinely) look did not seem to go down well. If only I had learnt more culinary stuff at an earlier age.

One day I'll be condemned. If only this was the 'Hall of infamy' I'd be made.

I thought she wanted salt. Pepper spray in the eyes really stings, and mustard gas is a real no-no ! My sometimes other avatar has a mate called 'Vinegar Tom'. I've only made him familiar to others on occassion, he's a real ******* http://books.google.com/books?id=F3vxlp0K0lEC&pg=PA29&lpg=PA29&dq=vinegar+tom+witches+familiar&source=web&ots=U3Ce7OjHZv&sig=KZraMPv7xdrYg2bg-0OixZyESkQ

A Hall of Fame Blog was not an original idea of mine, I was just supporting someone else who had the idea, so all blame should go to (nameless) him and I get only the possible Kudos please......

I still feel that it is a great idea and thank for taking charge and getting it working Case!

Great idea!

If this idea comes from GUEST, then lets not nominate GUEST.

GUEST would probably not show up to receive the award.

Then may I suggest the KrisDel™ combination for all the humor, art and useful (ok, ok...not always so useful) links they both provide on a daily basis? Life on CR4 wouldn't be the same without them...

You appear to live suspiciosly clo < Excuse me a second " I wouldn't expect to find Notable Quotes as the hall's centerpiece> se to Harlow. Are you one of the legendary cat family ? The ones that have something like 12 as a score for good answers. I know quantity doesn't equal quality, but I try ! Flip, I couldn't even place that quote in the middle.

Re: Hall of Fame for CR4

I respect and cherish the exquisite writing of Jorrie, europium, vermin, RHABE, Roger Pink, Blink and others, which gave me great pleasure, knowledge, and fab insights, during the time I was exposed to this great site.

I would be very hard to choose just one, and not for the reason ob being polite to everyone here, but for the obvious, continuous pleasure I had reading your really great stuff. Each spark in their own typical way.

So,

If (and when) there was a gun pointed at my head, I would have to resort to the inevitable choice, and nominate moose of all people, specifically because of the tireless and sincere effort, of simply building the skeleton of this structure we may call CR4, paved with his well thought-out blogs and articles.

For me, he is not just one of the writers but an architect writer who made his mark in journalistic writing in the sense that (IMHO) if we all stopped writing here one day, CR4 would still survive, thanks to his quiet, productive effort, which, frankly, for me, is dearer than all the pazzaz and brilliance in the world.

It's like, I admire the likes of Maxwell for their brilliance and unique genius, but deeply cherish the likes of Faraday for their overall contribution to benefit everyone, Maxwell included.

It's like, I admire the likes of Dawkins for their brilliance and unique genius, but deeply cherish the likes of Morris for their overall contribution to benefit everyone, Dawkins included.

It's like, I admire the likes of Feynman for their brilliance and unique genius, but deeply cherish the likes of Pauling for their overall contribution to benefit everyone, Feynman included.

It's like, I admire the likes of Einstein for their brilliance and unique genius, but deeply cherish the likes of Newton for their overall contribution to benefit everyone, Einstein included.

I hope you get my meaning, and intention here.

My vote is for Moose. Heck, in the darkest of times, he is the nominated guard of the flame here...

And of course, the immortal masu who with one post covers more ground than most of us do in a week.

And others, to whom I owe many thanks, yusef1, Abdel Halim Galala, cnpower, who filled me with their unique knowledge, and Kiwi-Jack (of all trades), Pino-Vulcan, rcapper the fine newtonian, and Greg G with whom I had the most exciting and long head-to-head debate on AI, and Pakistani-Haajee the bright computer buff and tireless green-earth and the WOW writer photonicgirl...

See, it's endless, there are so many I owe here, I'm bound to fail mentioning many beloved ones,

And so, if I didn't mention your name here, but we fondly conversed on these pages, remember you're on my list, even if not mentioned here. We both know and delight on each-other's writing. We both know.

Thanks

As others have put more than one forward, I feel I should as well.

I would like to put Jorrie forward as he is by far without any comparison second to none no doubt about it the most polite contributor I have ever seen in any forum anywhere.

I mean every word I typed above and I am not just saying this as I am still waiting for an answer HE can anly give in an other thread.

Every forum participant in the world can learn from Jorrie how to conduct him or herself in a forum, well done.
