SS 321 vs SS 316L

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the advantages and differences of SS 321 over SS 316L.

I am trying to purchase float type level gauges. The company standard is SS 316(L) for all instrumentation. This particular vendor only manfuctures floats in SS 321 so has offered SS 321 instead of SS 316L. According to the vendor, SS 321 is stronger and more resistant to corrosion than SS 316L.

I wanted to know specifically, if SS 321 is better than SS 316L for:
(1) Chlorides resistance
(2) Hydrogen embrittlement

316L is a low carbon SS

321 is similar to 304 with the addition of titanium as a stabilizer. This addition gives it greater inter-granular corrosion resistance.

Do you need SS at all-- ?

Do not be stuck with co. specs.

MayBe material whose level you are floating-is non-corrosive

321 Stainless Steel

A Chromium (17-20%), Nickel (9-13%), Iron Alloy modified with the addition of titanium to prevent carbide precipitation and resulting intergranular corrosion that can take place in certain mediums when operating in the 800-1200°F (427-649°C) temperature range.

316 Stainless Steel

A Chromium (16-18%), Nickel (11-14%), Iron Alloy with Molybdenum (2-3%) added to improve corrosion resistance in certain environments, especially those which would tend to cause pitting due to the presence of chlorides. Applications include deionized water.

What about plastics for the wetted parts instead, and add them to the company standards?

The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 321 (similar to 304, with Ti addition to improve temperature property within 800-1500 deg F), particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. So if you are really concerning chloride corrosion, then 316 is better choice. There is no difference in hydrogen embrittlement between 304, 316, or 321. All the austentitic stainless steels have exceptional resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in annealed condition.

316 is the grade of SS, L is the acrynim for Low carbon.

If you ask the a he would tell you this is the grade of Stainless Sheet/Plate and also for the filler rod.
