Flanges and Pipe Standard

01/29/2008 2:05 AM

Dear all,

I Have a doubt in flanges and pipe standard that is DN and PN standard. i saw some flanges mentioned as DN16,DN32.... AND PN 16,PN32....

What is the difference between he above

i understand that it gives PCD and wall thickness

When i design some piping what i should ake note

can you please somebody clarrify and give standard table

Hi, knr_karthik

What you have are DIN Standard designations (Now EuroNorm too). Surely you Know the ANSI type designation: NPS (nominal pipe size in inches) and Class (300, 900, 1500, etc) which gives you thickness according to the pressure/temperature rating.

European standards designation is trough DN (nominal diameter in mm) and PN (nominal pressure in bars).

You can google "DIN flanges/piping)" and look for any flange/pipe manufacturer. Most of them have tables with dimensions for all flange types (welding neck, slip-on, etc).

Anyway here you have a link: http://mdmetric.com/ss/flanges/flenzen_din_&_ansi.htm

Note: In the link you can see NW (nennWeite) instead of DN. Don't worry is the same but in german language.

WELL I WAS GOING THROUGH DIN STD. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING SCH.OF PIPE THICKNESS, I COULD NOT FIND, DOES ND STAND FOR SCHEDULE OF PIPES, I CHECKED DIFFERENT ND LIKE ND 16 ND 40 IN BOTH S WHICH IS WALL THICKNESS IS THE SAME,FOR EXAMPLE 40 MM FLANGE, ND 16 AND ND 40 HAVE SAME WALL 2.6 MM,HOW COME IS IS POSSIBLE.

I HAVE TO CONVERT ASTM/ANSI SPECS FOR PIPES AND FLANGES TO DIN, I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO, WITH OUT SCH.RATING OD OF THE PIPES ARE SAME,BUT WALL THKNESS WILL DECIDE THE PRESSURE RATING.

CAN ANYBODY HELP.

DN means Nominal Pipe Size, NPS : e.g. DN 15 = NPS 1/2", DN 20 = NPS 3/4", DN 30 = NPS 1-1/4", ... etc.

PN denotes to DIN standard specification number related to flange dimensions (rating or class): e.g. PN 6 = DIN 2631, PN 10 = DIN 2632, PN 16 = DIN 2633, PN 40 = DIN 2635, ... etc.

Please refer to the following site provided by Kwetz in thread Difference between DIN2501 and ANSI B16.5 fittings :

http://mdmetric.com/tech/2501sum.pdf

In addition to the following sites provided by me:

1. ASME B16.5 Flanges

There's no direct conversion for all types. You can take a look on the following link to see some interchangeability.

http://committees.api.org/standards/cre/some/refdocs/docs/07/annex1flanges.doc

Cheers
