Air Conditioner - Solar Powered

02/04/2008 3:41 PM

Anybody could give me an advice how to install an air conditioner far away from the electric grid where is many sunny days? Some idea is to use an absorption refrigerator heated by solar energy. Is any site with a process diagram of this kind of installation?

Here is a link that will explain it some, but you can find much more information and products, if you type Absorption Chiller or Ammonia Fridge into a search engine. Their are also Absorption fridges that work with water, so you might be better with the first search. My guess is this would be the most efficient option.

One other option that may not be as feasible but should work would be a Stirling engine. You can use the Stirling to drive a heat pump, or to drive another Stirling engine used in reverse for cooling.

Your last option which I am sure you have thought of but is likely your least efficient but most available, is a solar cell for power which is then used to drive an air conditioner.

I am by no means an expert on this, and I am only guessing as to what would work best. It was a topic I was interested in so I had done some research in the past. Do some searching, their is plenty of information to be found online.

What sort of water access do you have? Evaporative cooling just using water helps. If you start cooling air with an air conditioner, you will need to contain it within the space. There are many variables here.

I searched on appropriate technology cooling

Yes, HUX has the answer. An evaporative cooler is the ticket. It was used in the desert area of the midwest before cheap electricity. The only cost for you, that you have to wash the cloth periodically, as the water evaporates - cooling your home - but the minerals remain. Hence, periodic washing. Other than, it is wonderful, and energy efficient. Temperature difference drives it. Go for it.

It is true that an evaporative cooler is the cheapest to run, but it only works where it is dry and hot. I don't know about the person asking the question, but for me, when its hot, its almost always humid.

Right.

I need to check carbon filters. They may slow down an air flow, but let check this solution in my 50-95% humidity.

The last link you have for the diy one, runs by heating it, and then you have to take it off the heat and put it in water or whatever you want to cool. Essentially you have to cycle it by hand, its not a continuous loop.

The plans also use a strong solution of ammonia which can be deadly if your not careful.
