Certain Engineering Design aspects of 1200 T Hydraulic Press

03/06/2008 10:00 AM

Hello Friends ... In designing an upstroke hydraulic press having Two daylights and overall Platen dimensions of 3164 mm x 1792 mm x 63 mm, it was felt that, while the structure could be of welded construction, the Platens, Press Bed and Hydraulic Cylinders/ Rams could be in CAST Steel. The following illustration describes the basic data:

The questions are:

1. Is it technically acceptable to have Steel Cast Platens and Press Bed? What materials are suggested?

2. Would it be a technically sound proposition to have the Hydraulic Cylinders and the Rams also in Cast Steel? What materials are suggested?

3. The usual design opts for six Cylinder/ Ram systems to impart the Hydraulic Pressure on the Bed, which in turn would be transferred to the Platens. Would it be appropriate to redesign the bed system such that the entire Bed base acts as a Ram, with the Hydraulics working on the ram itself?

These thoughts have come up toward reducing the construction costs and also to reduce the Energy multi-fold. It is felt that the Prime mover (electric Motor Power) could be reduced to one-fourth.

pvhramani,

If I've understood you correctly you ask:

if melting the complete structure would save energy compared to the cost of welding specific locations on the frame???

A casting of the size and complexity necessary would definitely not be cost effective. over plate.

Very old designs used castings and newer designs almost always use plate, a conundrum.

Hi,

i was envolved in making a 1200 ton hydraulic press. It has bigger bed area than what you have.So for hydraulic frame structure we used ms with weldment. For hydraulic cylinder ,you can order hydraulic cylinnder power pack as per your requirement. You dont have to worry about material.

I can give you more info if needed.

Hello asishonline2000 Thank you for your volunteering technical help to design the Press, as aforementioned. The questions posed were (are) of TECHNICAL nature: whether we could redesign the different Components (Bed/ Platens, Hydraulic Cylinder+Ram and even Structure) so that Steel Castings could be used. The said idea was presented WITH DEFINITE PURPOSES - Recycling, using Less Energy and making the Press Design more GREEN. Of the various materials studied, it was observed that Cast Steel as per ASTM A-148 (better Grades in this) could be considered. Could the CR4 members with experience in such Castings suggest basic Design Criteria? pvhramani

My employer uses presses with cast steel frames and rams, up to 32" dia. If I can help with this design, how do I join?
