Difference between Plate and Sheet Metal.

03/08/2008 12:27 PM

I am straightening out the descriptions in the AS/400 descriptions so that they are uniform in and easier to read.

I have things listed like 3/16", 1/4", 1/2" and 3/8" plate listed as Plate, where as I have another category for sheet metal like:

24 gauge to 7 gauge sheet metal. This means that when ever a search is done for a part number you have to look in another place besides sheet to find the material listed as plate.

My question is that if I were to order a 3/16" sheet MS vs 3/16" plate hr or ms from a vendor, would I get something different?

Would the molecular structure of the materials be different and affect the function of the material. Is there a difference in rigidity?

Janissaries,

You haven't read the rule book have you, gain education of the subject.

I've never used either word. If I want 3/16" HRS, I order that by my specifications. I don't care what the vendor calls it so long as he meets my specs.

That said, I know that some engineers do use the words and they use sheet metal for anything measured by a sheet metal gage (e.g., 14) and plate for anything not (e.g., 1/4").

My experience has been that as soon as you put descriptions like that in a BOM, some purchasing agent is gonna interpret it and mess it up or else submit an ECN request to allow them to buy both things.

Salutations Janissaries,

No categorization of either sheet/plate or gauge have zip, nil, none effect upon the characteristics of the material, only the dimensional aspect. Depending upon the composition of the material the guage may represent different dimensions.

Yes, there is no problem related to any code of design or standard in differentiating between sheets, plates, or strips. May be the heavier thicknesses called plates and thinner thicknesses called sheets and narrow widths called strips.

Very generally speaking, 1/8" and thicker is plate, less than 1/8" is sheet.

Also, sheet metal gage dimensions vary by material, and location...

Plenty more here...

Years ago, we used to make the distinction and cut off at 11 gauge.

11 gauge or above was called sheet.

Anything thicker (10 gauge or less) was called out in fractions or decimals and called plate.

Just some old time reminiscing, hope it helps.

you have missed something obvious - the difference between Hot Rolled vs Cold Rolled. Hot Rolled sheet and plate (I forget the precise cutoff point - around 3/16" I think) is only processed at hot temperature - hence self annealing and not subjected to another heat treatment unless specified. Whereas Cold Rolled begins with the Hot Rolled coil, and is cold rolled to essentially the final dimension - much thinner and usually annealed after rolling. Talk to a steel mill product specialist or salesman.

I thank all of you for your information. Each of you have added something that answers my question.

I am going to leave it as anything listed as a gauge is Sheet.

Anything listed in fraction format as plate.

i think it is better to define the difference between sheet and plate in terms of length and thickness of the material.
