Ergal

03/19/2008 8:20 AM

I'm a journalist on a motorcycle magazine and in descriptions of parts and accessories I have frequently found reference to ergal; sometime lower case, sometimes with an upper case E ... suggesting it as a proper or brand name. Now I have long since reconciled myself to understanding that it is performance enhanced aluminium alloy, but is it a generic term or a brand name? When was it first developed and where? Is it a widely used process/formula? Is it proprietary? If the latter to who, where etc? Is there only one ergal or are there many versions? What are it's properties? How is it made? How does it differ in chemistry and manufacturing proces from 'standard' aluminium? Apologies for all the simple questions but treat me gently as an enthusiastic lay-person!

Yes thanks; I had read that Wikipedia entry, and while it has some information in terms of a broad hint at the chemsitry, it doesn't go where I need my info trail to lead me!

interesting that wiki reference was in Italian, there is no reference to ergal in English wikipedia, but references to ergal within wikipedia relating to Ducati motorcycles, T6 7075 reference within MTB magazines, lots of tuning applications for model and real cars, windsurfing, all instances where people will pay more for less;

- ergo, ergal is a trade name.

is your name robin bradley by any chance?

well done, you figured it out -- I thought of writing that backwards too but life's too short. Your conclusion about the how and why of something being a brand name is very astute. It is most common with Italian engineers and parts makers; somewhat in France and Spain too though. It is a weight saving high strength aluminium, and as a low quantity special order 'exotic' (relative to common or garden 6061 T6) yes, it does therefore carry a price premium and marketers will always mark-up still further anything that can carry performance improvement/weight saving claims. Apparently it is also more expensive to work with as it needs superior grade CNC cabinet tools, or at least different ones, and it machines more slowly as well. I really do want to get into the derivation of the word if I can though!

Don't know who came up with it - but it's surely from Erg (energy) + Al

Perhaps you may find something at this site.

Oops, already had that one. Forget it!

PS...did you look at the hyperlink at the bottom called Aluminum Alloys?

How is this for a plausible explanation:

Grain refinement is an issue in aluminum alloying and processing. ERGAL is Extra Refined Grain ALuminum. Or how about this: Easton is a well know producer of 7075 tubes: Easton Refined Grain ALuminum.

In usage, it seems to virtually always refer to 70xx series alloys. Some of these are about double the strength of typical 6061 T6 lawn chair stuff.

Duraluminum is a somewhat similar term, I suppose, which started as a trade name, but now is 1. not used a lot, and 2. means (meant) any of several age hardenable alloys.

Hello Ken,

Good answer, Ken! But consider...ERGAL spelled backwards is LAGRE...could be dyslectic for LAGER, LARGE or GLARE. I know, it doesn't make much sense, but it's late and I am not thinking clearly. Who knew that, in the final analysis, it would all come down to this? Good night and here's wishing you all the best in 7075. My, how time flies! 2008 seems like only yesterday.

TIC (tongue in cheek)

Ergal is a Cockney term used to describe any Lady's daughter..

" 'Er gal goes to the market for her."
