hydrogen supplement for natural gas

03/31/2008 8:56 AM

The response was for our last real life was so helpful we thought we would throw out a hypathetical question to everyone. Is it possible to build a hydrogen cell utilizing solar energy to be used to supplement a natural gas supply mixing the two after the main gas prv?

Thanks in advance!

LockedUp, Yes it is quite possible, but you must adjust the burner for the mixed fuel, hydrogen has very different thermal properties than NG. Much hotter. It is possible but maybe unnecessary. Why not just use hydrogen? It is easily produced as needed, zero carbon footprint, and best of all: no petroleum is involved.

Easily reproduced as needed? I have always heard otherwise, that state of the art was not there yet. Can you elaborate?

mobilemechanixx:

check out this other thread:

Judge for yourself the validity of the claims.

I'm still waiting for some proof that the various laws of physics are wrong as most of us understand them.

Garthh, I await proof as anxiously as you. Over unity would be so nice if it could be made to work. Perhaps these guys are onto something, maybe, somewhere in this universe, the answer actually exists.

Until I see proof, though, I will always call shenanigans!

Cars run wonderfully on hydrogen, I know, I have tried it somewhat(also see mythbusters). The problem has been producing it quickly and cheaply enough, and if some bird figures that one out, then the Nobel prize would just be the beginning.

However, it seems I have heard of a highway in a small European country being built for hydrogen only cars, with refueling stations powered by solar energy, but they could not come close to sustaining a significantly large number of vehicles like seen here in the US.

Hello

You find number between 5% and 15% without the need to modify your installation.

There are already a number of gas companies who already adding hydrogen (to reduce the CO emission) in Holland or are about to. For Belgium I find no numbers.

What do you mean when you say "There are already a number of gas companies who already adding hydrogen."

Adding hydrogen to what?

Belgium and Holland are small and dens populated countries. We have Natural gas distribution grid all over de country.
In Holland they are debating to mix natural gas and Hydrogen. Hydrogen would be generated with electricity from wind turbine parks and others. ( it is a way to store energy from the wind)
This would have the advantage that it reduce the co2 emission.
It will be a test for minimum two years. They will be mixing from 5% to 20%.
to see and test how the grid, material, heating devices, react to this.

The petrochemical industry comes up with the hydrogen as fuel all the time. In the cracking process, H2 is created when double bonds are forme. The hydrogen is recovered and used to saturate pyrolisis gasoline. The excess is taken to the HUGE heaters in the process along with natural gas and some other excess gas streams.

Hydrogen is a problem in burners. It changes the mixing ratio in the primary and secondary air. To compensate, special custom made burners are installed. These burners still have limits. They can only burn 0 to maybe 15% H2. All the time when the H2 rates are changed, sophisticated controls adjust air and damping. Another limit is with emissions. Yes, CO and CO2 are reduced, but NOx change change and the controls on the heater must make sure it doesn't get out of limits.

Finally, H2 has a market value of 3 times that of natural gas, why burn it? If you want to use renewable energy, just stop with the electricity and use it. Hydrogen is only a form of energy storage or a BATTERY in your proposal.

ISN'T THAT THE QUESTION?

Sure! If you are satisfied to enrich with minuscule amounts or, alternatively, build a hell of a large solar unit for your cell.
