P&ID Design Guide

Can anyone provide a P&ID set of rules guide. For example its good practice to have a valve prior to a screen, for maintanence reason, but obviously this is an easy example. Is there something on the web I can down load so to give me guidance on how to design any P&ID

What surprises me as to how you have not yet come across any P & ID Drawings to give you the idea if you are in this field?

Why do you not first go into sites of Boiler (Garioni/B&W)/Steam Equipments(Spirax/Armstrong) / any or Processing Machines (Goller/Benninger/Monforts) manufacturers sit and download 1000s of P & ID , study them and make your own.

A good P&ID, or suite of P&IDs, will have a legend sheet as part of the package. There may also be company Standards, and a P&ID legend sheet will no doubt be among them.

As to the "correct" positioning of valves and major plant items, their review is part of a HazOp study, carried out at an early stage of the design process for both new plant and also alterations to existing plant. HazOps are a team game.

Look for books from ISA.

Get a contact with any of them - mouth 2 mouth (even phone) is the best in my "expertise" as a designer.

I believe what you're asking for are good installation practices, not drawing guides.

For example:

  • Install flowmeters upstream of a flow control valve.
  • If your drawing shows elevation, the flowmeter should ideally be installed on the vertical portion of the pipe where flow is going upward.
  • Install temperature gauge at the outlet of a heat exchanger.
  • etc.

Such a list will be quite extensive but some of these are common sense. A good source of application guides may be found in manuals or at a manufacturer's website.

Here are some general guidelines:

- check valve on pump discharge line

- block valves on the discharge and suction side of pumps

- drain valve on pump suction

- bypass around flow control valves

- double block and bleed where necessary

- line numbering including line size and mat'l of construction

- show set pressure, in- and outlet diameters on PRVs

- legend sheets

- lines continueing to the next drawing should be at the same height, show drawing nr.

- main process lines should be thicker than utility lines

- etc., etc.
