There are some legitimate programs with nearly the same name. There is Norton Antivirus 2008 and Panda Antivirus 2008 but this was just plain old Antivirus 2008. I'm not entirely sure how it came to be on my computer. It seemed to just pop up and offered to check my computer for viruses. I obliged and in short order, it told me I had 43 viruses on my computer. For $59.99 I could purchase the program and it would clean the viruses up.
It established a couple of icons on the Desktop, one for the program and one to un-install the program. The icons looked similar to the AVG icon. It offered to print a report of the 43 infections, so I agreed. Here is a partial listing shown in bold print:

It went on for about 40 more listings indicating how badly my machine was infected. I was pretty worried but it seemed to me that it had come to this conclusion rather rapidly and as I pondered what to do, my AVG (free edition) warned that it detected a virus. Did I want to remove it? I agreed and a second later it asked again. Again I agreed.
Except for the icons, the program Antivirus 2008 had been removed by AVG. I was lucky, but it's something to remember. Since then, I have checked the internet and found that there is a bogus program by that name...something for everyone to keep in mind.
