Please register and give more information about yourself. In the mean time find a mentor to take you under their wing.

Does your school have guidance counselors? They should be the ones to ask first.

Then see post #1.

The question which you have paused is true not for mechanical discipline but for all others too.

The what one study and what is practical application is two different things. Study only helps you in how to think logically.

So only time is an answer.

Education can only take you so far. Real learning takes place in the work environment. Hopefully your school allows you to work as an intern where you will obtain practical experience. Many others, including myself, had felt the same way you did while in school. Hang in there.

Hi there 2nd-Year Mechanical Engineering student,

In addition to what's been said here, I suggest you also seek out an in-person meeting, and attend either a meeting of your school's local student chapter, or the working adult chapter, for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). You can find contact information for your local chapter at their web site, http://www.asme.org.

Folks at all levels of their career attend these meetings, and you can get some good guidance there. It's also a great place to find out where the ME-related jobs are in your local community.

Good luck on your path!

You don't give any information as to your age and country, what are your goals? Engineering is a broad field as you progress in school you should ry to determine what field you would be most interested in. Manufacturing, research, design. I was!! a manufacturing engineer in the US but with manufacturing going overseas that probably would not be the best avenue today for an American. Look around talk to people in engineering see what they do. With only 2 years you have not entered engineering classes mostly prerequisites for future courses. Unfortunately most schools teach theory not practice.

In the US it is still hard for a girl to work "in a mans world" whatever that is. My daughter did it "her way" the hard way. She took macineshop in High School and Community college. she then worked in machine shops for experience. She was fortunate to get a job doing CAD Programming even though she had not done it before, but her machining background helped her. She then got the job of designing hydraulic hoses on backhoes. She went to the shop floor and worked with the people who would have to install these hoses so that they would work. She had 2 plants to work for one in the US and one in England. One day she was in the England plant working on the factory floor showing the latest changes. She was called to the phone in the office, she was written up by the Union because she was in improper dress for the office "blue jeans" She explained to them in strong language from now on bring the phone to her she would not grace their office again. She is strong tells it like it is and has gotten the respect of management an was promoted again. So a woman can beat the rule in the US but I am not sure of many other countries.

I'm electrical engineering student but i think that engineering forums is a great source for all engineers also there is MIT-OCW for students.

In electrical engineering we have IEEE the number 1 source worldwide ... google for similar institutes for mechanical engineers.

I'm wondering if lolomechanic's local chapter of ASME might not be a "good 'ole boy" network and therefore not very open to having women in their ranks. Does anyone have any knowledge of existing businesses or programs abroad willing to sponsor lolomechanic's education? It may mean traveling to a foreign country. I hope that is okay with you lolomechanic.

Engineer's goal is to solve problems. You'll find in your working days you'll be required to solve non-mech problems. The trick is not to know how to solve every problem, its knowing someone who can solve a specific problem.
