Rice Storage and Insect Problem in Hot Climate

07/29/2006 10:06 AM

Ali writes:
On the below subject we ask advice from rice storage entomologists and experts, or professionals.
We have rice in 50 kg pp bags stored in warehouses of concrete blocks walls with concrete or steel frame,on shelves w/ a distance of one(1)meter apart from the ground, sides, top roof. On shelves 4 rows of bags piled on each other.

We have a small black insect problem in the rice. What are your sugesstions on preventing this from occuring.
Night temperature reaches minimum to 30 degree C, where they are located.

Please give your advice

Rice protection against insects and other microbes

The only think I am sugesting you can do is to to add a reasonable quantity of iron, any shape, size...etc. like nails from used in home constructions. We did this time ago succesfully and never ever had insects or other infectious surprises. Regards, Dumitru

Those black insects you talk about, we call them "weble". You can try the leafs from the "Bay LEAF TREE" OR what some people call the "Clement Tree" or "Clement Leaf". Put these leafs between the rice. Regards Johne.

Bug in the Rice

I have kept the critters out by running grains over common window screening fashioned as a tubular funnel as you make 2 of these larger than the bag or bucket of grain being cleaned- place 1 screen funnel inside of the other and divide the pair with 3 or 4 well placed stapeled 3/4" thick wood blocks between the pair- wrap the outer with plastic sheathing or say 28 gage iron sheet metal- sealing over and onto inner funnel so to make a sealed cavity to pull a high volume of vacuum from a powerful shop with a clean bag to inspect the critters- dip the bag into some household bleach to immoblize the creiiers. I used an oiless air compressure to force 135 psi air into the cavity to aggitate the grain to clean and rebagged and sealed plastic bucket. If you mix Hot red pepper and black pepper in hot water and strain with coffee filters- put into sprayer tank and lightly mist the storing area- floors to ceiling- few critters will tread if any- will not contaminate the grain.

Pest

07/31/2006 1:12 AM

Dear Ali, please see that the surrounding of your warehouse are clean and disinfected regularly. Fumigate the entire stock and ware house initially. Take necessary steps to prevent fresh pests entering the ware house. It is for sure that you will have to use the appropriate pest control management and be sure that the pest cannot be controlled on a single dose...

Just try to store your rice with an air-tight metal container (Iron steel) nad lets see if this will help or not
