Controlling the temperature in a Peltier based beer cooler

05/18/2008 1:55 AM

Dear Group,

I have purchased a Peltier based beer cooler, this product can store in its interior 8 beer cans and have two modes operation, hot and cold. The cold is almost 4°C and the hot is almost 60°C. I need the control the temperature in 20°C in the interior (not for beers, of course)

I have a on/off digital controller, so I need to know where I should connect it to controll the temperature with my own set point.

is this a 12 volt cooler or 120/240 VAC cooler?

if 12 voltes, you will need to interrupt the source DC with a 12 volt DC relay that can switch 10 amps or more (depends on the power used).

If 120/240, you will need an AC relay good for 2 amps or so.

Bear in mind that the circuit will have to provice the relay actuation voltage and also operate the set point circuitry from this voltage, so you might need to be able to determine this.

You can buy free standing thermostatic units that do this

Dear Aurizone, thanks you.

is this a 12 volt cooler or 120/240 VAC cooler?

The product is in 220 VAC. My question is, where I must include the controller?

The peltier device operates at a low voltage and there will be a switching power supply that takes the 220 volts AC and makes a lower DC voltage that runs the peltier unit. It is this DC you must control.

You can turn on/off the power to the switching power supply and that can be used to control the DC that runs the peltier, or you can control the high current DC that runs the Peltier = a bigger relay.

just get a thermostat that will control 2-3 amps AC and has a sensor that goes inside the cooler

We use a similar device in our systems. It is from a different manufacturer though. Anyway, ours has a small pot mounted on the board to set the desired temperature. If this fails, you could read the manual...

Look up the name on the PCB and do a web search. You might be surprised by what you will find.

It would be better to use variable voltage to control the temp rather than a switched mode controller. If the device is being pulsed on or off faster that 1-2KHz (depending on manufacture) it could damage the couplings. It would also be beneficial to have a solid state or a closed loop controller and a high quality TC or RTD to measure the temp on the cold side of the peltier. I do not wish to over complicate it, but I would feel better warning of pending destruction (been there) than just throwing any ole' temp controller on there. Also depending on manufacture the are not very tolerant of EMI, that could disrupt Imax and Vmax and damage the device. So with all that said vary the voltage of the device to your set temp, and let that be your control.
