What Are The Top 10 SciFi Movies?

05/25/2008 1:01 AM

Somehow I came to wonder what CR4 participants would certify as the best Science Fiction Movies. Doctor Strangelove is one of my picks.

A great science fiction movie is one where the science is correct.

On the Beach, and then Contact come to mind.

Of course I had some problems with Contact. Seemed too big to happen.

Blade Runner looked right.

I hear Iron Man is good.

What is the good Science Fiction top ten movie list?

Re: What Are The Top 10 SciFi Movies?

As I am a great fan of Carl Sagan, I read the book first and must say I did not like the movie as much and it probably will not even feature in my top 25.

I would love to see one of Greg Bear's great novels like Eon or something. May never happen, too clever I suppose

I once saw this movie with those plant growing pods on the ships for future reseeding of earth after a nuclear war or something. They were then ordered to scuttle the pods but one of the crew could not bring himself to do it so he murdered his crew mates and ignored the orders. He lived happily with the gardening robots until the ship reappeared near earth so he set the remaining pod free with some of the gardening robots and that was the end. I forgot what it was called and I was young and that is long ago so please don't tell me what it is and I have to look it up again only to find out it is not as good as I can remember. I hate it when that happens.

Think that Space Odyssey will have to be in there. Don't forget Event Horizon.

What about Barbarella?

Did you ever see her as Honey West on TV?

ABC canceled the series after one year. According to Wikipedia, they had just acquired the rights to The Avengers, and they thought the public couldn't tolerate having two karate-kicking females on the air at the same time. They sure didn't ask me!

Hi BAB,

You sure got it right there Chief.

For my first three years at Nirimba I was an AAA, then they decided that the Fleet Air Arm would be phased out in the early sixties. We had a choice of going to QANTAS or changing over to Ordinance or Marine Engineering, I chose the latter...............no regrets...............even though I had to do four years work in twelve months.

Aliens, not just the best science fiction movie but a great well paced movie.

It must be hard for filmmakers to get the often (pseudo) philosophical message in adult SF stories across to a mass audience, as recent efforts like "Sunshine" and "I am Legend" show.

Still even watching a low brow SF movie aimed at 17 Y.O.'s is better than watching pretentious "Art" movies about "relationships".

Re: What Are The Top 10 SciFi Movies?

05/25/2008 11:54 PM

Hmm, for me, believe it or not, it would be "Terminator" as the movie was its own past and future. Ask my wife, and she would say "Buckaroo Banzai" is her favourite. But I think that both are a bit far from a believable reality that can be supported 100% with science. At least our scientific capabilities at the moment, that is.

I saw "2001-A Space Odyssey" when I was a child, and I was too young to grasp everything that was happening. I watched it again more than a generation later and was able to appreciate it. I saw the sequel, but did not like it as much.

The statement "A great science fiction movie is one where the science is correct" reminds me of one of the lines shouted by the audience while watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It is the scene where Riff Raff grins at Dr. Scott and says "Yes, Dr. Scott-a laser beam capable of emitting a beam of pure anti-matter." And of course the audience shouts "No it won't! Do the Physics!"

An interesting choice-Dr. Strangelove. I think at the time it was depicted as happening that it was very possible. I agree with the idea of the original post-a science fiction movie that contains believable science is the most enjoyable by me at least.

Interesting Thread-Thanks!

Ing. Robert Forbus

But I must ask... what *was* correct in RHPS?

The show alone without the Sience Fiction Double Feature Picture Show, threw mant people with the raw sex basis of it... as it was advertised here in Melbourne Au, when Cats was playing ... "More pussy than Cats" this is the actual advertised catch phrase.

A few months ago Cable had on Red Dwarf, from end to beginning, wow what a change from the last shows to the first shows.

A great science fiction movie is one where the science is correct.

If the science is correct, a movie probably won't qualify as science fiction.

Right, but it does need to have internal consistency.

That movie "ET - the pumpkinhead" was stupid because it lacked such consistency, for example in one scene the ET is running from pursuers, but in another it could fly.

In no particular order (and open to discussion).

2001

Blade Runner

Aliens (count all as one but number 2 is the best)

Forbidden Planet

Silent Running

Dark Star

The Thing

The Abyss

Minority Report

Quatermass and the pit (this last is only a personal favourite....)

If at least 9 out of these 10 don't figure inyour own top 20, you're just wrong.....

Hello everyone,

Don't forget the Andromeda Strain, it has the science in it at the time to make it very

believable and it still holds up. I just has seen it again recently on cable. In another

newgroup on lasers they were talking about it and the ability to burn skin and what power levels needed to do it. The scene was when a doctor/scientist was trying to

get to the next level up in the maintance shaft during the emergency.

And I also agree with most of the other movies discussed also.

Iron Man should have been General Audience at worst. More a kid movie than adult or even teen-er. Like watching Saturday morning cartoons on the big screen.

Star Trek, without a doubt. Now more than 40 years of good story continuity. Okay, so TOS was pretty campy, but TNG had great character development. DS9 and VOY were so-so, but Enterprise was great ... now, coming to a theater near you in December, the next pre-quil exploring the beginnings of NCC-1201, probably featuring Captain Christopher Pike.

With few exceptions, this, now 40-year-old story has remained consistent within its created universe and created future, developing characters and future-histories. Forget the conventions and trekkies if that bothers you, because that never does justice to the overall phenomena of the longevity of the story.

As to 'factual', only the future of science will tell us if teleportation, phasers, fast-than-light travel, force fields, and transparent aluminum will come to pass, but I would put most of it's 'science' in the category of at least 'plausible'.

There is other SF that I can say I like 'better', more entertaining, more thrilling, etc., but its hard to beat the Star Trek record.

Good stuff.

Nope, I read that it's going to be the TOS characters with new cast, but featuring Leonard Nimoy as Spock, probably having LSD flashbacks--and it's NCC-1701.

Live long and Prosper--And get a little on the side.

Pike didn't disappear into a wormhole. He was 'one of the' first Captains of the NCC-1701 (not 1201 -- sorry, I suffer from 'old-timers-disease' ). Pike was severly injured in an explosion. He was the Captain during the pilot episode (rarely seen) and never featured in TOS except in one two-part episode with many 'flashbacks'.

It seems to me that circa-Pike would be the logical step for the new movie coming out. He was the Captain of the NCC-1701, Spock did serve under him (although none of the other familair crew members), and it could be a valid pre-quil.

Could be interesting

Sorry Buddy. Good Info. It was just something I half remember from a episode of Enterprise when they were dealing with the Time Travelers. Typically in Oz Land we get out of date and not in order episodes of most science fiction series. They completly skipped the first series of Stargate and went straight to Series 2. Always late at night (11.30pm). For 10 years I always wondered where Teal'C come into it.

I was watching Voyager once and without warning they find Earth. End of series. Stupid television station didn't even say it was last episode ever.

story continuity? The star trek Universe maybe consistent but the storylines are not.

Last weeks story has been forgoten the next episode, story wise it is nothing like babylon 5 or the (new) Battlestar Galactica

DS9 was actually based on Babylon 5, but with the Star Trek theme.

And for those who think not?

A space station orbiting a planet, a jumpgate/wormhole close by it too.

Funny how 1 of the later chars that appear on DS9 is called Gkar (or similar)

Not the biggest but good watching when it came out is Enemy Mine.

Don't ask me who was in it as I don't do names (much).

It was about these reptiliens that we were fighting and one of us and one of theirs came down on this unknown planet (enemy mine).

They started fighting but then build up a friendship due to a new common enemy. Very good film with a nice heartwarming ending to it.

I think Enemy Mine stared Louis Gossett. Jr. and Rob Lowe. It was actually the last movie that I watched at the theatre!

Do you mean to say they recently repeated it or that you have not been since 1985?

Did you like it or was it sooooo bad in your opinion that you never went back to the cinema since

Farrah Fawcett played the assistant to the facial alteration doctor, so both are correct. Also Farrah dies in an explosion later in the movie. I actually saw this movie at the theatre as a boy...great flic!

Death of a President [2006]

Years after the assassination of President George W. Bush in Chicago, an investigative documentary examines that as-yet-unsolved crime.

Forbidden Planet

Day the Earth Stood Still

The Thing From another World (50's version)

The Invisible Boy

When Worlds Collide

Blade Runner

The 5th Element

Alien/Aliens

Terminator series

Tremors

A Boy and His Dog

This Island Earth

Invaders From Mars (50's version)

War of the Worlds (50's version)

Mar's Attacks (a real hoot)

Village of the Damned

Invasion of the Body Snachers (50's version)

Mad Max, 2 and 3

On the Beach

I know this is more than 10 but good is good. I was lucky enough (and old enough) to have seen the 50's classics as a youngster on a full-size theater screen. Seeing Gort for the first time as a 7 year old made me slide down in my seat. I wouldn't consider Dr. Strangelove SiFi but political satire no more than I would the original Manchurian Candidate. Of course there are more good ones (The Monolith Monsters come to mind) but you have to draw the line somewhere. Any other candidates?

You must be REALLY old, I have only seen 8 entries (counting your series entry as singles).

Just goes to show that this question is really linked to when you grew up as none of those old ones would make sense to people that saw the science produce proof for or against the ideas in the films. I am not saying these films are not good, I could not as I have not seen them. It is just that those I know from the old archives were strange when viewed many years too late.

My daughter cringes when I mention Stanley Kubricks films, she is 15 and loves both films and books but thinks they date easily.

Your list is good. I understand the reticence to accept Kubricks Dr. Strangelove as science fiction since it is an earth bound human story pivoting on science. Still we knew the Bomb was a made by us star, and could wipe us out. The senario and the science stand up partly because it is limited to what we knew and had demostrated knowledge of.

Kubrick was a great director and we all recognize 2001 a space oddity as science fiction. Still I feel that Dr. Strangelove is a better Sci Fi than 2001 because it was so plausable.

Mr. Asimov was no slacker and I have not seen his original screenplay, but am beginning to suspect some things about the physics involved.

Aliens is a favorite.

Terminator is so far off the list since backward time travel is not known to me.

The Sliders physics explains it as creating another universe either way.

So maybe there is a validity moshed to make the story emotional.

The Man Who Fell to Earth, with David Bowie is interesting.

Repo Man is up my alley.

"You'll be alright.", "Well maybe not."

Dune was insane as far as the flying Victorian Wooden Coaches and the only scene I was for was the flag love scene.

Mr. Roddenberry was right to untilize science in conjunction with Greek Mythology.

I also met Rod Serling.

A director told me that great movies are always a Quest.

Logan's run - cool take on population control theme

Independence Day - Great characters, especially Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch (funny as father and son)

Equilibrium - favorite movie in the last 4 years

Rollerball - too cool

Planet of the apes - original with Charleton Heston

Outland

WAR OF THE WORLDS HAS TO BE CLOSE TO #1. MADE IN THE FIFTIES THE EFFECTS WERE INCREDIBLY GOOD. NO COMPUTERS BACK THEN FOR THE SPECIAL EFFECTS. THE STORY LINE IS COMPLETLY PLAUSIBLE. ACTING WAS BELIEVABLE.

ANOTHER WAS, THE THING , AGAIN PLAUSIBLE AND IT WILL SCARE THE PANTS OFF YOU.

ON THE BEACH ALSO GREAT AS WERE ALL THE STAR WAR FLICKS.

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE ALSO NOT BAD AND PLAUSIBLE (MAYBE NOT A WORLD, BUT COMET OR LARGE ASTROID)

STARGATE ALSO GOOD.

"A great science fiction movie is one where the science is correct."

I have to disagree. In many movies the science is fiction - hence the term science fiction. To enjoy one of these you have to turn off the engineer, and turn on the child. I haven't seen all of those mentioned, but I like most of the ones I have. Dark Star was a loooong time ago. Some others that come to mind:

Planet on the far side of the Sun

My Favorite Martian

Martian Chronicles

Chain Reaction

The Time Machine (60's version)

The 6th Day

Star Wars, all episodes

Saturn 9

Actually it was Arthur C Clark not Asimov? I think I made a mistake. Still I think a great Science Fiction movie has good science as its foundation. Other stuff that is entertaining is fantasy.

Hello everyone,

How about the oldest scifi movie Metropolis

as far as the movie goes it's has a lot of forward thinking before

any there was scifi as we know it now.

The TCM Channel had a restored version sometime last year.

So what do you all think?

Hello Vermin, I would say the original, BUT since I was not around in 1927... but to here my Wife talk I'm older than _____ "fill in the blank" In real life I'm 44 she 38.

But back to the movie, the latest one seems to have the most restored film in it. Also it

has inspired a lot of newer movies one way or another.

"Queen version"? Sorry, Freddie was one of a few singers. He sang "Love Kills" under his own banner. Wasn't it classed as Giorgio Moroder's version Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, and Jon Anderson to name a few singers.

Ok, ok, maybe it is not serious science fiction, but I loved the practicality of the movie's basic premise, that the most valuable cargo in the age of interplanetary travel is... WATER!

The last movie I went to see in a theater was Twister. Most people would not regard it as science fiction, but meteorology is science, and it might be the mother of other sciences. As people in the earliest societies moved from the tropics to the temperate zones, they encountered weather that was different than anything they had experienced before, so they began to wonder about what made the weather change. This probably got them to wonder how other things worked.

And much of the meteorology in Twister is fiction.

(Plus it had two good-looking babes and one of the best quotes: "I can't talk now. We've got COWS!" )

I would never have thought of twister as a science fiction movie but you are 100% correct and I agree, it's a great movie with 2 super hot babes and science at i's very heart.

Re: What Are The Top 10 SciFi Movies?

Yeah, you got to throw in Soulent Green. My wife brought Metropolis up and there you have the visual platen for Blade Runner, if not the story itself. I ought to watch it again. Jules Verne was good for a remembrance.

I think we are getting close to consensus on ten. I am looking for the ones that have "correct", or what?- "Really generally scientifically empirical."

What if ever was ever made from a Theodore Sturgeon story?

Creighton wrote Andromeda Strain, didn't he? I am glad I took microbiology.

If I wanted to come up with a "Fantasy Bests" I'd put that up on another forum.

Of course a "Fantasy List", would be good for children to compair as some things might look like Science Fiction, but not really be that. It was interesting that Vonnegut did not want ever to have his work in the Science Fiction Category.

Star Troopers was big with a Star Trek Trekkie friend of mine.

Heinlein was good at filling out the motivations of the characters in the world he constructed, though I agree that what humans have discovered is that outerspace, is much more hostile than we actually thought from such stories.

It is then impossible for me to fully argue with Jules Verne's Time Machine and the category with the caveat of "correctness" will be in not alphabetical order, but from known science, human (or robot) drama, with those works that inspire the scientific quest to answer the unknown, at the bottom of the list.

Who shall be the judges of the codified top ten list according to that criteria?

I suggest Chris Leonard and Moose from CR4, and 3 from the thread, question, with hopefully some weight to my judgement, since I asked the question.

Certainly I am interested in Chtanks opinion here.

Wim Wenders Until the End of the World has influence over me.

The original Time machinene ( i like the whole victorian retro tech like in legaeu(need spell checker) of extraordinary man and in Hell Boy)

Lost message. Rewrite: On The Beach, Dr. Strangelove, China Syndrome, Andromedia Strain, Blade Runner, Star Trek Movies, Until the End of the World, War of the Worlds, The Thing, Alien. Vying for historical reasons Metropolis, & The Time Machine.

As a bit of digression: What is right or wrong with the physics that underlie Sliders?

Star Trek has had such great influence it is in a category of its own certainly in the permutations of television and movies.

P.S. I was writing while the load editor box was on screen, and when it finished what I wrote was lost at the time of the action completion.

OK. English Lit. 101...

Most Science Fiction is considered somewhat inferior to normal fiction because some scientific effect, device, takes center stage from the human experience (Don't argue with me, this is what they teach you in college). I tend to agree. It's easier to write about a science thing, rather than the effect it would have on the human condition.

Taking this into account, I think movies like the original Thing, Blade Runner, Aliens, and AI are really good movies. When the real emphasis is on how we react and respond or utilize a fanciful scientific thing or stretches our experience, the book/movie is always good.

Re: What Are The Top 10 SciFi Movies?

81 was my last attempt at the list from the thread notes so far. I address the insult by putting On the Beach, and Dr. Strangelove at the first.

I have also mentioned Vonnegutt's view, as well as remembering Theodore Sturgeon's work.

It is true that little that was done in the Science Fiction Section is actually Literature. (Like Pornography, we know it when we read it.)

Vonnegutt said something to the effect that 99 percent of Science Fiction was crap, and Sturgeon said 99 percent of all written, was crap, so he didn't care one way or the other.

Forgive me a bit for I am writing as a writer who sees movies, and knows how they come to exist as a grip or electrician, or DP, or actor. I have read every book Nevil Shute wrote, including "Slide Rule" which he wrote under his real name, Nevil Shute Norway.

I put On the Beach first in my list because there is more agreement in the thread for that than Dr. Strangelove, as first, and they are so similiar.

I did put the question to a group of guys at the bar who are in their mid 30s to early 40s and they had some titles in mind that I have not seen, and know nothing about.

P.S, the insult is that science fiction cannot be literature.

What's the difference between a writer and an Author? - A writer writes 25 books, 4 of which are literature, and an Author writes Four books.

What's the difference between an Engineer and a Physicist. An Engineer fixes things and makes things that work 24-7 for 70 years, and a Physicist has 4 ideas., of which three are wrong, or incomplete.

For every good science fiction book, there are literally hundreds that are pure crap! It's beyond me how they ever got published in the first place! I go to the book store, and there are a few interesting books doing well... Jurassic Park, for instance - with the premise of what would it be like for us if dinosaurs came back.

Next to that book, there are rows of paperbacks. I pick up a few with promising titles. Total losers, everyone of them! A couple of obviously hollow characters that have been included in the story for no other reason that "someone" has to start "The Machine!"

If you want to see really, really bad science fiction, see if you can get your hands on a DVD of Tales From Tomorrow. This was the very first science fiction television show, started in 1953. Each episode is about 30 minutes of the most shallow, go nowhere, crappy garbage ever put on TV!!! And that's really saying something! The only thing these stories are any good for is that two of them star a VERY young Rod Steiger who shines as a real actor compared to the other cast members. Also, there's a one minute bit part by an even younger James Dean.

If you do get to see Tales From Tomorrow, just make sure that you can breath through your mouth, because you'll be holding your nose!!!

Hi Vermin.

I would like to submit that "Plan 9 from Outer Space" still holds the title for the worst script that ever got made into a movie. It also has some of the worst acting and appalling special effects. The aircraft cockpit scene just reeks!

It is so bad that it is funny.

I tend to agree with you. Ed Wood was really inept as both a writer and director. And where the hell did he get those actors!

"You're stupid! Stupid!" and "That was too close!"

However, Tales From Tomorrow are just really good examples of bad science fiction stories. The list of actors is incredible! In 1953, ABC was in New York, so the only actors they had access to were Broadway actors... Burgess Meridith, Victor Jory, Boris Karloff, Leslie Nealson, etc...

But even all this talent couldn't save these terrible stories!

You are right.

While I do believe there are some wonderful SF books, the talent is in the writer and never the topic. Dean Koontz is one of my favorites, because his stories are always unique, people-centered, and a wonderful blend of 'normal', and just 'beyond normal'.

Unfortunately, some 'wannabe' writers, think FIRST of the 'cool' pseudo-scientific topic, THEN try to spin a story about it. Real story telling is completely the other way around.

I am always intrigued by how television SF has evolved. The original Lost in Space TV series was total garbage with no character development, and not even any real special effects. The story lines were trite, and there was almost no continuity from episode to episode. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, was another horrible attempt. It seemed in those days, writers and producers thought the public was a mass of idiots who didn't know and didn't care.

Although Star Trek Original Series was much better, and used that 'platform' to speak of turbulent 60's issues, it lacked depth also.

Jump just a little forward to the first Star Wars movie ... the opening scene of the battle cruiser chasing and firing upon the ship carrying Princess Lea and the droids ... no dialog yet ... just 3 minutes of real action and believable special effects ... the theater was STANDING and CHEERING.

(sorry, now I ramble)

Bottom line is, people want entertainment, and good entertainment has to be either purposefully fantasy, or at least plausible science, and it must be a human (or other persona) story, not hinging only on the 'cool stuff'.

Oddly enough, the two shows you mention were Hal Wallace productions... The same guy that gave us a number of the 70's disaster movies! Belch!!!

By far, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine was the best of the lot. Since it wasn't a show about a traveling space craft, they were forced to exercise character development. By the end of the series, one really noticed the difference in the character from the beginnings and actually cared about all of them. They finally got it right.

It just goes back to what Chaucer and Shakespeare knew... No matter what the story, the characters are paramount.

yes there is

The Gathering was the pilot, depicting the arrival of the major characters to the Babylon 5 station in 2257. The made-for-TV movie In the Beginning depicts the events of the Earth-Minbari War, as revealed in the first few seasons, in chronological order and in greater detail than the main series. The made-for-TV movies Thirdspace and The River of Souls are largely stand-alone episodes.

Babylon 5: A Call to Arms set-up the premise of the Crusade series, depicting the Drakh releasing a nanovirus plague on Earth, which will destroy all life on the planet within five years if it is not stopped. To that end, the destroyer Excalibur is sent out to look for a cure.
