I concur. If this doesn't help, then you have a really, REALLY bad rootkit that has copied itself into your BIOS. If this is the case, you'll need to get a disk (off a clean machine) that you can use to overwrite the original BIOS image... Ugly!!!

Do you have any kind of protection in place (firewall/anti-virus/anti-malware etc)?

What gives you the impression he is breaking the law and using Windows XP illegally?

I must be missing something here.

Are you going senile or something?

Follow this link mouse over Products & Services then select Security Suite, select download trial from the right side panel and allow the program to attend to the troubles.

You should run your computer as little as possible. There is a family of viruses that will erase your BIOS. "Chernobyl" is the best known of these. Some motherboards have a built-in self-rescue routine to save the machine from a corrupted BIOS, but some can't be repaired, and must be replaced. Without a functioning BIOS, nothing on the computer will work.

There are lots of other bad guys as well. The best solution to your current predicament is probably just to erase your HD, re-format it, and install everything from scratch. If you are using some version of Windows, you should go to Windows Update as soon as you have installed the OS and download and install all the essential updates before you even think of going elsewhere on the internet.

To prevent a recurrence, buy a reputable anti-virus product, install it, and keep it updated. You might also spend some of your internet time informing yourself about the viruses, trojans, and worms out there. In the past, avoiding "iffy" websites would give you some measure of protection from malware. No more. Now, you must block it. It's everywhere.

If you go to Microsoft.com and download Service Pack 3 for XP, you get all the safety updates for SP1 and SP2, and beyond.

"also have Quick Heal Antivirus installed & also I have done Online Scan twice, also downloaded Spy-ware Terminator, but it only detects, not removes threats..."

"Windows Firewall is on!!"

You haven't mentioned any good anti-virus/firewall software, realize if what you are running was effective we wouldn't be having this conversation.

When operating in a hostile predatory environment a hardware firewall used in conjunction with no less than excellent software as back up can be employed to circumvent these type failures.

Post #3 will give you advantage with a free trial which you should, you should asap use. Uninstall all that other junk and turn "windows firewall" OFF!! And get rid of the malware and adware and spy wares they are just in each others way way and hamper protection by the package I recommend.

I've run as many as 5 or 6 firewalls simultaneously because I was paranoid probably but the idiom "better to have and not need than need and not have"...

Hi gsj, can you give us some answers please with regard to your OS and anti virus software before we can go much further?

For anyone else, you need someone with a clean computer to download from one of the big anti virus software companies a free Bootable CD image that can be used to boot a moderately modern PC (with a CD Boot option in the BIOS) and to search for viruses and eradicate them.

I recommend Kaspersky as it runs fast and does not slow your PC down as much as Norton does, also Kaspersky is usually the best antivirus/Firewall package in many good tests.....its also reasonably priced.....and has good support.

If the BIOS has been infected, there are other procedures that might be needed, but as you did not mention this I will ignore that for the moment.

Afterwards download and run AdAware and Spybot Search and destroy, they will find (btween them) most MalWare that is around.

If you are still having problems, it could be a Rootkit, but come back and tell us and then we will try and help you further......

I have windows xp professional Version 2002 (sp2),(i guess unregisterd!!!).

512 Mb RAM, Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.40 GHz.

I have Quickheal Antivirus insatlled & also I have done online scan twice last week.

A day before i had downloaded Spyware Terminator.

It only detects & does not remove the worms.

I have got all my imp docs & songs & also pics..

If i copy them on a cd, the virus or worm would also get copied with it.!!!

I don't think you can update an Unregistered version of XP (perhaps any ms product). One writer has mentioned something very important. Be very careful were you surf these days. There are a lot of sites who's key purpose is to infect you. Be cautious! We have a responsibility to 'stay clean'.

You can't be angry with ms because a stolen version of their os didn't work as you had hoped it would. Without regular updating you are vulnerable.

Don't be reluctant to reformat. It is a quick an easy solution to compared to many others. Be certain your software is 'up to the task' of fighting these pc demons. Not all software is born equal. If fact some "antispyware" is in fact spyware. Research, research, research!

Good Luck!

As you're stuffed anyway, you might as well copy all your important files onto CDs, then reformat. Next, make sure you've got some crackin' good anti-whatever software installed, and use it to check out you archived files. If the infection is a hidden .exe (or is hiding in an .exe) chances are you won't have copied it to the CDs. If it's lurking in a macro in e.g. a .doc, you should be able to track it down, quarantine it on your HDD, and clean it.

It sounds as though someone's been a naughty boy! Have you also been doing a lot of file sharing/downloading as well?

You say the spyware detects the worms, but doesn't remove them. This sounds like the "free" ones that will find, but not remove until you buy. My advice is just buy them! If you're too poor to buy these relatively cheap programs, how do you afford the electricity to run the PC in the first place!

Sound like it's time for someone to take responsibility for their own butt.

From here: QuickHeal is not a good av program. Nothing special. Poor detection rates.

appears that unless the malware is not flagged as "archived" Quick heal will not "see" it.

Does not like to scan OS files, where most malware likes to hide.

Suggestion: uninstall Quickheal and find a better AV program like Bitdefender, NOD32, etc. BUT, i would advise staying away from symantec's products (norton's, etc), or Trend micro products.

Try this one. Install, let it scan, and see what it comes up with.

Or you could use the trial of one of the best out there, this one.

More than one anti-virus is not a good idea - they can get upset with each other and start a fight .

More than one anti-malware programme is probably useful; some are better than others in different areas. I use AdAware and Spybot S&D, which is the same combo that Andy Germany recommended in #9 (before he got upset with you, and stomped off ).

Just a shot here...
Go to start\search and type in the file and folders window
the word Hosts
then hit enter.

See if there is a file called hosts. Not hosts.sam or any others with an extension.
If you find one right click it and select open with Notepad.

Copy the contents & post it back here.

Some malware will dump a load of web addresses into this file, typically sites like Symantec, Grisoft etc. the sort of sites you would go to to fix a virus attack. This would prevent you from accessing those sites.

hey gsj,

Sounds nasty. The best option would no doubt be to reformat. But i know that sounds like a lot of work. If you would rather try some anti-virus programs first, i recommend AVG. It's free, so you got nothing to lose my giving it a go. http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

However if you still have problems, after all the programs suggested above, then you really need to bite the bullet and reformat. Sorry, i got a bunch of trojans once and after a night of formating, my PC was working a lot better.

The best to resolve the problem is get a backup of important data and reformat the PC. Prevent this issue installing a good firewall and antivirus software or hardware.
