If one assumes that to be a 'Master' implies you are better than average...then you would appear to have answered your own question when you say you are an average student .

But if you want it enough and work hard...
Would you become 'better than average' quicker by gaining real life experience.

Is and ordinary degree plus experience better than a mediocre masters with no experience...?

I know which I'd prefer.

I worked at a small-mid sized family owned company. One of the owners nephew was 'bragging' that he was going to go for his Masters Degree in business.

I suggested to him that before you go for his masters, maybe he should go for his bachelor's degree first.

His reply was, "That takes too much time." . As foolish and as much trouble these nephews were, their silver spoon stupidity was funny.

Why take the business ladder to the top, when you can use the elevator.

For real........"an average student", what does this have to do with what it takes to graduate from school. Math and understanding the veriables in concepts to building codes and actual experience in the field is what it takes to graduate with honors.

An average student? Does this mean you are known to skip a few classes here and there and not turn in all your required lessons on time? Or does it mean your study habits really suck and you can't seem to find the discipline to buckle down and go the extra mile to turn in your assignments early?

Either you go to class with a dertermination to complete the required cources or you suck wind and look back on your past of what you could have become from any given point in time!

School is school! It all means the same! Attend the classes, take your notes, read the assignments, do your math and get on with life! It never changes......you will always find yourself day dreamming of where you can be and what else you could be doing at any given point in your class activities. Its all about you and your realistic goals. Either you have the balls to discipline yourself to move on and up in live or you just coast and be another Lemming in the crowd!

Do you want to be a Leader or a Follower?

The question still stands..................................

I'm actually very curious what those who have achieved a Masters in Mechanical Engineering have to say on this.

Also is it harder or easier than it used to be and are the professors any good or simply washouts from industry? (what weight should it carry??)

You can do what ever you want if you want it bad enough. I was barely a average student in high school. After getting kicked around for 15 years in the real world I went back to school. I studied 10 times harder than anyone else and I was on the Deans list every semester. But only because I really wsanted it. How bad do you want it? Maybe it is best to get kicked around for a few years so that you can realie how imporrtant education is.

PS most professors suck but it is still what YOU put into it.

It almost sounds like you want "to do" Masters just as a means toward futher advancement or a raise or something. If that is the case do not do it. If you "love" making things work better because you were involved or you want things to be made better or you just simpley can not turn your mind off after being offered a problem "go for it". I hope average was meant to reflect you grades not your commitment.

Just a thought from field.

If you are doing it full time then it is easy especialy if it is by course work. You just go to uni listen and learn, then spend 3 hours studying for every hour you spend at uni. Part time is harder you still have to find the study time even if you are working O/T. Study after a 12 hour day is hard even though you get may get a longer period to complete courses, having falling off the chair a few times during lectures sound asleep I can confirm this is not easy. By distance learning it becomes more difficult especially if lectures are dickheads, this is a common problem no matter how you do it but with distance learning unless you have a good support group poor lecturers can make it a nightmare. If you really want to do it go ahead, if you don't want the hard work don't waste your time simple as that.

GA Solarbuster. The first year of college I worked a night shift and went to classes during the day. Falling off the chair was easy to do. You sound like you are a hard worker.

What I wonder is if the poster of this message is tough enough. I read the post and he doesn't take the time to write a complete sentence or spell out some of the words. Is this a person who will give what it takes to be successful?? I can remember many bad days at school when I wanted to quit - but then I would remember all the shitty jobs I had and then I would get at the studies again.

First, let us make sure we understand the question.

You want to know about "Master of Science" in mechanical engineering, or something else?

What country are you in?

Will this MS be from an accredited engineering school, or something less?

Do you have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering? Is a a Bachelor or Science degree from an accredited university?

How it that go? (The B.S.M.E.) Was that tough for you?

What is your grade point average at the undergraduate level? Does it qualify you to gain entry into an accredited Master of Science program?

Do you have any work experience? Is this experience relevant to the mechanical engineering field? Are you finding work difficult, or are you well adept along these lines?

Do you like mechanical engineering?

Do you have any friends in mechanical engineering?

Do you have a professor or advisor that you can talk to about this decision and to map out a program?

Think about how you would answer these questions and reflect on it for a bit.

Get back to us with your thoughts.

You will find that you will have priced yourself out of the job market. I have encountered someone fresh out of school with his Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

He was worthless and lasted about a week. Because he had a MS he felt he was above having his drawings checked (by lil ol' me no less). I gave his drawing of a sliding motor base a cursory look and it was a train wreck - despite he had a drawing of a larger one that had been designed, built, installed and in service for 6 months.

Experience pays. Get your BS, get a job, work hard and earn your keep.

That is a very good point,

If I could add an example, we had rented out some buildings that we weren't using for a lab.

The government had given a grant to investigate and run experiments on on insects.

The professor (in entomology), he administrated and ran the operations was very well educated, a very basic person, a naturalist to a point of being eccentric.

After it was over he had a very difficult time getting work. The response was your over qualified for whats needed, even though he was willing to take a reduction in pay. And by the time he had a job he was literally on the verge of starvation.

your comment;

He was worthless and lasted about a week. Because he had a MS he felt he was above having his drawings checked (by lil ol' me no less).

I have experienced the same, they have to realized the higher degrees can only open the doors alittle farther, and that its not a free pass.

One other thing, slight off topic, I had interviewed and engineer the on his resume it stated the he was a graduate of MIT.

His demand was about $25,000.00 more that the going rate for entry level, he only cared of what the company can do for him. I question him farther and found out his alma mater was not the MIT I was thinking of, but Minnesota Institute of Technology.

Never once did he mentioned that, nor would he clarified it, only after I asked him directly.

MIT

There is also a "Matchbook Institute of Technology". Don't forget about that.

Usually Master degree will require you to maintain above 80% mark. That will take more work then getting the degree only. Do you think you can put an extra 50-100% effort into studying for a whole year?

I can maintain 70% without studying but 80% will require a lot more effort for me. So I skipped the master even after one prof asked me if I'm interested.

I haven't met Master who think they're everything but I've seen enough PhD, PEng who don't worth half what the company paid them. It almost like they trade their brain for the title.
