Biodiesel Product-mix Separator Concept Design

07/19/2008 9:37 PM

Transesterification product mix of biodiesel and by-products is often water-washed by mist washing; however, that approach has water droplets or spheroid falling through the biodiesel fluid and even getting trapped within the biodiesel, and as such problematic. However, a more efficacious approach based on the formation of Micelles suggests having the biodiesel droplets float through the water. A concept design serving a basis for all biodiesel washing separator designers to build on have been developed and extensively discussed with respect to the underlying scienceand design limitations. For interested engineers, the concept design discourse details at

balderdash to this.

The OBJECTIVE of water washing is to REMOVE 'soaps' from the diesel product. Removal to very low levels is essential to making product meeting ASTM specifications.

Water consumption for bio-diesel washing is a costly item because it must then be cleaned to nearly drinking quality before discharge or reuse. It is MUCH more economical to have a hydrocarbon up-flow continuous phase with hydrophillic structured packing, counter-current with down-flowing dispersed water phase. This will maximize soap removal with the minimum amount of water, without making emulsions.

If you are extracting ions fron fuel and there are more opposite polar ions around it does not the electrostatic pull increase than the other way around? That is my scientific basis.

What is the scientific bases for your assertion?
