2001 chevy cavalier hard starting after running fine

09/09/2008 12:21 PM

125k miles, 5sp. after driving for @ 30 minutes and stopping for a few minutes (gas, food etc) the car does not turn right over as it does after sitting overnight or for an extended time (few hours). This happened a few months ago and a battery replacement seemed to do the trick, 2 months no problems until last night. in morning checked battery vdc with meter and engine off 13.2vdc, vdc with engine on 14.3vdc, checked cables to battery found pos cable slightly loose (tightened), will try today and purchase some injector cleaner, let you all know how its going , but please any other ideas please reply

Your Cavalier should have good access to the starter from the front under the hood. Check voltage drop as you try to start the car after the hot soak. Start with the battery bolts themselves. (side terminal battery correct?) If the voltage drops, clean and re-tighten the terminal bolts. If the voltage still drops below 10 volts have the battery load tested again. If the voltage is good on the bolts, test the cable wire itself next , followed by testing at the starter main cable post. don't forget that you must follow both cables. If you look, you might see, or feel a hot spot on either of the battery cables

Thank you for responding. Try to find some clever name to use here so you will not have to hide behind "guest"

Sounds like you might have the same situation that I had. I have a 1991 Chevy S10 with the 4.3l V-6. The problem I had was like this: Drive to the store, no problem, drive to the bank, engine just clicked like the battery was dead. I'd wait 15-20 minutes, and the engine would start fine. Solution? Where the problem was traced back to was the solenoid, on the starter. Turns out, the solenoid, and the starter itself was too close to the exhaust under the motor. A shroud didn't help, fibreglass didn't help. What I did was relocate the starter solenoid to the firewall, and bypass the solenoid under the motor altogether. Just run a jumper off of the hot side wires, and right up to the newly installed solenoid. Problem solved.

That was a common modification on the Chevy big block engines used in motor homes.

The remote solenoid is an excellent solution to overheating starters. BUT,there are millions of these Cavaliers out there that are not commonly having overheating starters. Your starter is mounted low, in the front of the engine and with plenty of airflow around it. Before doing the remote solenoid, test the battery, cables and starter connections.
