MUST SEE VIDEO CLIP of Archers Paradox

11/06/2008 5:22 PM

Here's a must see super slo mo of how the arrow flexes around the bow.
The fist few shots aren't the best, then there is a super view of it.

For anyone who doesnt know the archers paradox... At full draw the arrow is pointing at the target, if the string is slowly allowed back to the rest position the arrow will be pointing way off to the left due to the width of the bow...so why doesn't the arrow kick left when it is shot???

Answer it snakes it's way around the bow.

Shows the arrows rotation nicely too.

(BTW I copied the link from Archery Interchange a website for nut cases like me)

Just noticed some other videos...one showed the result of a 'Robin Hood Shot', a target arrow stuck in the back of the first arrow.
I can do better than that I've seen pictures of 3 arrows stuck together from an indoor target shoot! Accurate but expensive!

Impossible! Mythbusters tried to split an arrow twice and proved it cannot be done.

It was one of their more entertaining shows. They had archers at a Renaissance Faire try it, set up a bow in a fixture to try to make each shot identical, and I don't remember how many materials they mad arrow shafts from. The best they got was a split arrow that followed the wood grain, which ran to the side of the shaft.

Sorry, but all I can say is that their archers weren't that good (or should that be lucky?!)

I have seen this done at an indoor shoot with steel tube arrows. One of my mates at the Archery club did this to his arrows. I was there when it happened. All shooting stopped for a while as we all gathered to see this thing oft told in legend. Somewhere in the NW of England (assuming he's still there!) I'm sure the pair are still mounted.

This was particularly expensive as he had an enormous drawlength and thus extra diameter and wall thickness - hence mega-expensive arrows.

Hi Del. - Nice thanks.

I Have a Bushman bow and arrow (quite old) with no flexibility and arrow is actually deflected by rubbing against the bow. I was always wondering how they actually hit the target.

Why don't one make a hole in the bow to pass the arrow through?

'Cos it rips the flights off? ..
Kiddies toy bows are sometimes like that... with a little sucker on the end of the arrow (sometimes both ends!)

Many modern bows are cut away to be a 'centre shot' or very near it.

If you look closely at one of the bows in the bow in the video it is cut away a bit with an 'arrow shelf'

Hi, Del,

I think you can clear up a few misconceptions here.

I understand that up to the 1600's, it would take 2 years to properly train a bowman, why so long?

Does the same effect occur using a Longbow?

Same question but with a cross bow?

YOU are NOT a nut-case, I've never seen you at any of the meetings, besides, I've been known to shoot a quiver or two in my time.

Dunno that it takes that length of time to learn to shoot...but it takes some time and practice to learn to shoot a heavy draw weight bow effectively and to judge the range...no sights on a longbow...

The medieval bowmen were well trained and well discipled...and I think the organisation and deployment of the archers is the key to their success. The Frech had archers at Agoincourt, but they were sent to the rear and were no use there...the French nobles were squabling for the privelige of being at the front of the battle! No discipline no tactics...no sensible use of resources!

Crossbow is easier to use, but like any weapon there is a big difference between being able to use it well and safely. Any idiot can fire a gun, it takes a bit more thought and skill to cack and load a crossbow and even more to shoot alongbow.

When kids used to ask if the y could shoot my cross bow I'd say 'yes if you can cock it' ...that limited the kids who got to try it to those strong enough and generally sensible enough.

Sadly I'm not much of a shot myself

I guess this redefines the concept of "straight as an arrow", huh?

Thanks Del,

It does make me wonder how I was so accurate with a bow and arrows in my youth.

I've split lots of arrows and had to start using the targets with 9 bullseyes instead of one.

Couldn't afford the Cedar arrows now. Last time I looked they were over $100US per dozen (unless you are a boyscout, part of the 700Billion dollar bail out was for arrows for them)

That was one Mythbusters I knew was BS. Usually the plastic nock just shatters but too many times the arrow would split clear into the head. I only did this with field tips, razer head hunting arrows were to expensive to use for practice.

Actually, Boy Scouts of America accepts NO goverment money. It is paid for by the boys, their parents, and private donations. As for arrows, the boys always buy their own. they are not provided.

Part of the Bailout stimulus package was for arrows to the Boyscouts from the state of Oregon or Washington. Made the papers up here when it was passed. I don't to claim to understand it. Nor do I think it would be something the papers would lie about but they do lie.

And the Boyscouts may not accept them but someone is getting paid. And I'm not nocking the BoyScouts (pun intended) I have some very fond memories from Cub Scouts to Eagle Scouts.

Hi Dell,

Cool pictures. In high school shop I made a bow with the arrow slot deep and in the center of the bow. It shot very straight and a long distance. I wish I still had it.

Myth busters used wooden arrows that split and followed the grain exiting the side of the arrow I robin hood an arrow almost every weekend as they are hollow carbon.it also helps to be shooting at 300fps.Myth Busters looked to be shooting at about 60fps

It is a good sight to see the first time and at $40 a time really anoying the next time

ps there are some slomo vids of the magnesium risers flexing from the release of all that energy also
