adhesive for attaching pyester felt to poyypropylene or Mylar

11/17/2008 8:37 AM

I am looking for an adhesive that is suitable for attaching polyester felt to either mylar or polyproylene plastic. I am expermimenting with Trickle Down solar hot water heating panels and need to have a product(adhesive) that does not discolor and block the sun...the black polyester felt must not appear faded or else the solar heat energy will not be absorbd as well. The adhesive needs to stand up to 212F and in the presence of water.

How about thermal or ultrasonic welding?

In other words, "super glue"

Cyanoacrylate ("super glue") breaks down with sustained exposure to water. It also won't tolerate continuous exposure to boiling water or those temperatures.

Possibly epoxy? I'm not sure how well it sticks to polypropylene. It should bond well to the felt.

How will trickle down collector stand up to hardness & other contaminants in the water ? Won't it gradually clog up? I presume you want to slow the flow in spite of steep angle to catch the sun? Run tubes across the collector one way with a slight slope to a collector header & cross into an adjacent header for next stage of heating?

I suggest to use Polyester felt to Mylar, then you will have many choices in selecting adhesives----Basically Polyester and Mylar are almost same chemical family and will have better compatibility and heat reistsance than Polypropylene---Mylar has better environmental stability than Polypropylene------So if select Polyester Felt and Mylar combination-------then you can use most Epoxy, Mastebond or rubber modified epoxies--------Refer to 3M adhesive catalog

Are you sure? The adhesive must be transparent or else the sunlight will not pass through it to the black felt matt below. I really must have something that does not hinder (or minimally hinders) the solar energy from getting through.

There is a second option: If the adhesive was Black, it would absorb the energy also and this would be ok too. Does this allow for more adhesive options?

Check the websites listed below:

http://www.3m.com/product/index.html

http://www.dowcorning.com/applications/search/products/default.aspx?bhcp=1

These are three of the top adhesives manufacturers around, I'm sure whatever you end up using will either be, or be similar to, one of their products.

I would be concerned also with potential toxicity of whatever adhesive you are using especially if it is being heated to that temperature and getting in contact with your water.
