What does @ refers in mail id.

In the simplest terms... It is the divider between "account name" and "host name".

For example...

"joe.blow@hotmail.com" means, the account "joe.blow" at the SMTP host "hotmail.com".

The character "@" is what is known as an ampersand, and it has been given the slang expression "at" when refering to an email address.
