Some Rules of Thumb for Pumps

I need some information about thumb rules for pumps in detailed engineering part. My friends please help me out.

In what aspect? Mechanically (bearings, seals, ....)? Hydraulically (NPSH, speed/flows, .........)? Civil (base design, vibration, .......)?

Lastly what kind of pumps? Centrifugal? Positive Displacement?

for cetrifugal pumps, and Hydraulically
