CR4 Challenge #OU812

02/01/2009 10:10 AM

What is this device? What do you put in it? What does it measure?

The glass part rotates 360 degrees.

Viscosity or flow rate of ??? Still working on it. Wait, got an idea (ouch, that hurt). Get back to you later.

Does it have to do with heat and expansion?

Here's just some suppositions in attempts for backward redesigning of whatever it could be:

As it's glass so one can be used in high temperature conditions. To say, ambient temperature and/or ambient moisture measurement.

As it has rotating part one can be used in measurements for gas/air streams (depend on flowrate direction).

It would be filled by two non mixed liquids with visible boundary or liquid only and gas bulb.

Think someone here has better suggestions.

How about a scientific device to check what impurities are in the vapour of a liquid at a certain temperature!!

To measure Ph of water anywhere from 7.0 to 7.3. (maybe that is what the carton box states the ph it should have). Can be for checking Blower draft in " wc.

Any make available?

The box in the background has nothing to do with this instrument. It just happened to be on the bench when I took the photo.

Would you mind posting a closeup shot of the scale on that device?

Will seeing the scale really make a difference? It seems close enough if you save the pic then enlarge. It starts at the bottom with 1.o and ascends incrementally but in reverse.( ie .9,.8,.7...). And the scale expands as it "rises". Curious.

Almost as if it is to "stretch" time as the liquid(?) rises in the tube.

Re: CR4 Challenge #OU812

It's made for some kind of liquid.

The second picture shows a vertical extension to the "tube" on the backside, but the first picture does not show it at all, which means the extension remains vertical, so it must be the entry point.

Once the liquid is introduced into the tube, it is rotated as needed, but is eventually left with the scale in the vertical position for taking the final readings.

The "bulbs" in the tube are for heating the liquid and/or gathering condensate or solids.

So, I guess it's not a thistlewick.

Yes, it looks like as vernier scale. But for what? Angle by readings where bulbs were placed?

I think it's rather something like two thermometers for humidity measurement.

The scale seems to be in terms of Microns

So it has to be a particle size measurement.

My current guess is a air analyser (never seen one , you see I am inside them , but never seen from outside ) or any other type of suspended particle size analyser, how it does it GOK must be some sort of a centrifuge mechanism

It's a vacuum gauge!

We had a wiped-film evaporator and we used this to see if we were getting sufficient vacuum.

Ours looked to be the same (ancient) exact model as you show here.

Where did your mercury go?

Hi Europium,

I'm glad there are electronic solutions nowadays, though you would pay dearly for solutions that would measure as low as these things will.

Thanks (I'm assuming it was you) for the GA.

I am not understanding the tone of your reply. These are actually supposed to hold Hg, but can be emptied and the Hg stored in a safer place when not being used. As for the hassle of using this thing - it was a pain-in-the-butt to take it out to the WFE, climb a ladder, hook it up and take the readings - especially when it was raining!

Today, if I had to take vacuum readings that low, I would buy an electronic solution!

I also found the triple distilled mercury that goes with it.

Re: CR4 Challenge #OU812

Well, the instrument goes back over 30 years. It was replaced, about 25 years ago for an electronic device.

We used to have a titanium vacuum melt operation. I only got to use this instrument a few times before it was replaced. It was an absolute pain in the ass to use. It was used to measure the signal from an impulse line, to calibrate a controller. That operation went away years ago.

My company has been around for about 125 years. The plant that I work in has been around since 1955. As instruments have become obsolete, they have been thrown into the "back room". Nobody can bring themselves to throw shit away. And I'm glad they didn't. Most of this stuff belongs in a museum. Shot of that, they make great CR4 challenges.

Whatever a "titanium vacuum melt" operation is!? I "got" to use this thing many times and, as I think I said in a post elsewhere here, it was, as you said, a pain in the ass. The sad thing is that we were using this 6 years ago in a chemical plant - we were doing so badly that we couldn't afford an electronic solution.

Enjoy your posts again now that I am back - I've been away for a while since I was laid off - took 6 months to find something else and had to relocate at that!

BTW, I think I get the prize since I beat Morgan 23 by 41 minutes. So what do I get? To keep my job? That's great because I'm still in the not-taking-it-for-granted stage.

I had no any intentions to be ill-toned. Plus I supposed the background of all Bricktop's Challenge# threads gave us some room for humor/ironic. I like that blend here. I do adore all this "old" stuff as well as a very profound and really ingenious engineering of pre-electronic era. However, I do apologize if my comment has offended you in any way.

Hi caramba,

I didn't think you were being ill-toned but I couldn't tell if you were being humorous either. Was it the seemingly waaaaay overconcern/paranoia of Hg that lesser-informed people have that you were referring to?

I also like the humor / ironic mix here and I appreciate you hanging in here and giving your input.

No, I didn't get any "ill-toned" stuff at all. I really like your input in all of the threads here at CR4. Looking into the background, and looking beyond the apparent, is what we are all about as engineers.

I've been wondering for some time, how have you developed such a good command of the English language? What is actually your native language?

It sound like you have lead a very interesting life, and are very well educated.

CR4 is great. Having a friend from Kazakhstan is very cool.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THIS PIECE OF EQUIPMENT? This a top secret project of great commercial sensitivity.
This is a permanent motion machine. Filled with the correct formular liquid (Pats. Pend.) and with a strategically placed candle it will spin due to the alternating evaporation and condensation of the fluid (Pats. App. for). The output shaft, connected through the zero friction bearing (Regd. Des. & Pats App for) to an old car alternator will produce a guaranteed minimum of 3Kw/hr. Shares in this exciting project can be bought through my bank -Lehmann Bros.
My regards, Doodlebug.

This is a McLeod gauge for reading vacuum. I'm not sure of the spelling of McLeod.

It is filled with CAREFUL HERE "Mercury" the most recent bane of the universe that elicits fear in the little lady and brings the HAZ MAT team out in full regalia, quarantining entire neighborhoods for milligrams thereof. The same mercury we old guys used to roll around on the desk in chemistry class.

Hi Morgan 232,

you are right, I operated this at school having been responsible for physics experiments.

It is turned to open (by flow of mercury) the internal cavity to the vacuum system, turned back to close the connection with the moving mercury and then further back to compress the enclosed vacuum = gas by the weight of the mercury.

This compression is giving a good sensitivity without the necessity of any electronics.

On a google search of 'OU812' I come up with Van Halen. Now it's popular belief that Eddie is an astronomer and he had a thing for the lead singer of Queen! So is that the Mercury link or am I in a vacuum of my own?

"O" - OH, "U" - YOU, "8" - ATE, "1" - ONE, "2" - TOO

OU812 = OH YOU ATE ONE TOO

Really has nothing to do with the item in the challenge.

Oh, you ate one too? It should not have caused a vacuum though :>)

What ever is produced or distilled in this, try it with some orange juice. Watch your eye site. In prohibition times it would have been worth its weight in gold. I'll have a closer look later to see what I would do with it. Maybe Pineapple snaps? Hicks, Ky.

Lawdys...! Poster 23 nailed it, and some knuckleheads voted him "off-topic"!!!

If you ever witnessed an autopsy, you'd know a "stomach contents seperator" when you saw it. It determines how many jalapenos and pickled eggs were consumed per every ounce of alcohol consumed.

Too bad it doesn't have a V-belt drive, I'd loan you my tension tester.

Hey. What are you getting so sore about?

I'm the one who found a doctor that thought it was a rectal thermometer.
