Valentines Day Gifts for the Engineering Wife or Girlfriend?

I need some good valentines day gift ideas for my engineering wife.

I usually get flowers or candy. Candy is out because we are cutting back on junk food. I will still get flowers too, but I would like to get something more unique, unexpected and a surprise that a technical person would like.

Other CR4ers might need ideas for their engineering husbands, girlfriends, boyfriends, partners or significant others - especially if they wait til the last minute like I often do. I'm lucky I remember at all.

In this economy - a thrifty gift would be good too.

An Evening out. can include a nice walk on the beach, candlelit picnic for the budget etc.

Small vacation getaway. Rent a cabin for the weekend, head to the coast.

Dinner...out, or you make it yourself, candles are a must.

from my experience, good memories are the best gift one can give. material items last but a short while, memories last forever.(in most cases)

I agree. The small vacation getaway is superb. You don't have to go far. Find a hotel, (or cabin), nearby, (but not too nearby), that has rooms with a private hot tub and a fireplace. You need at least 2 night's to do it right.

RVZ is spot on here, a very smart man.

Pick a date, it doesn't have to be this weekend. Just give her the resevation details. Stick them in with a nice card, with a bottle of her favorite wine. You win twice.

I know times are tuff. Paris is probably out of the budget. However, the times you two spend together, alone, are priceless.

I will be away for valentines day so I thought a trip would not be possible.

I did not think about getting reservations for a weekend trip in the future. This is a good idea.

I'm not a fan of integrated gun locks. They invariably jam up the gun when you need it the most. There is a reason why police officers don't have integrated locks in their weapons. If it is not good enough for a cop, why should it be good enough for me?

But the thought is good. It shows that you love her enough that you want her safe at all times.

When seconds count, a cop is only tens of minutes away....

Most girls on Valentines Day just want to be pampered. I suggest doing things like making her a romantic meal for two. Going out is overrated, plus VDay is more about doing things for each other rather than buying things for each other (contrary to what jewelers tell you). Turning off the lights and using candles instead not only save electricity (yay!) but it ups the romantic factor.

Also, a thrifty idea if you are short on time or cash is to make a coupon book. It sounds cheesy, I know, but it shows her that you really do care. Make coupons like '1 free back massage' or '1 hour of no computer'. Whatever you think she may enjoy. But be prepared to give up or do the things the coupon says.

You could also rent a nice movie (doesn't have to be a romance or romantic comedy). Make a heaping bowl of popcorn (or snack of equal caliber) get a big blanket or comforter and cuddle and watch the movie. Do not go out to the movies... waste of money and if you don't like the movie, it could be a waste of time.

The bottom line is that the focus should be spending time together and not spending money on the other.

As a girl, I have to say the coupons are fabulous! :P

Also, if she really likes her job, you could get her something feminine related to that. For example: I'm studying electronics and I am crazy about a pair of resistor earrings, made with real resistors; I always carry a very fancy screw driver in my purse (making her a pink fluffy one would be priceless); and I would love to see a real engineer barbie in a toy store one day... This would tell her that common prejudice about women nor being good as engineers is not (always) true and that she can keep her feminine "vibe" while being a successful engineer. You know, girl stuff... ;)

And you can use a lot of the advices to get different gifts for other occasions, too!

Show her how the birds and bees do it! In this case (see instructions/photo below) the Cairns Bird Wing Butterfly. I took these shots this morning and presented them to my wife. Plus some extras, just to make sure.

If you show this to your "sweetest honey bun ever baked", make sure she understands the 'beautiful one', down the bottom, is the female. The male above is just trying his heart out to seek even more attention. I had in the past seen how they really get it going but the procedure can take hours so I just left it at this.

I got my girl a card with a farting cupid as the punch line! Cooked her a nice bloody as hell steak on the BBQ with potatoes, corn on the cob and a salad with a nice pinot noir. I also got her a set of darts, which she loved! But I have to admit I have a very unique and wonderful girl. We then went out dancing & drinking & dart throwing that night (wish all Valentines Days fell on Saturday). I made a nice brunch on Sunday morning and we curled up in front of a fire and watched movies and fooled around all day long, hubba hubba.

I think perhaps doing somethings that show you love and care for her are more important than the details involved. Although a coal necklace might not be a good idea.... takes too long to turn into diamonds :)

I've found that doing something that she enjoys, and that she is aware that you don't, usually works out well. Going to a dance can also generate a lot of romance without a lot of expense.
