billions of old tires

What happens to the rubbed off truck and car tire rubber? The sides of our highways should be bermed up with some form of rubber residue but its no where to be found and the tire manufactures are not talking. Tests come up empty from soil samples and road side air filters. I have no answer. Good luck.
