Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) or Pressure Safety Valve (PSV)?

Good post.

PSV can also mean "pressure sustaining valve", and PRV can mean "pressure reducing valve".

Someone, surely, can sort that lot out.....

BTW: Both are for pressure the names are clear and none are used to regulate the flow.

For flow (infact as a bye product) you have pressure control valves (PCV)- where the flow is controlled through an orifice to effectively control the down stream pressure.

PSV and PRV both are related to pressure but there is difference between PSV and PRV.

One is pressure safety valve and one is pressure relief valve.

As the name indicates Pressure safety vavle . it is for safety. The pressure rating of PSV is always higher than PRV. It opens at a larger preeure when PRV fails to operate.

PRV - Pressure relief valve. It relieves the pressure. Pressure rating is always lower than PSV.

A common example of PSV and PRV is pressure cooker , just have a look of it .

Pressure cooker is having both PSV and PRV. The hexagonal shape valve in the cover of pressure cooker is PSV and valve at top which relieves the internal pressure is PRV.

The valve on your water heater is both. Excessive pressure or heat will cause it to open.

The most important words for clarifications already are said by other members of CR4:

- RSV and PRV in principle are the same: both are used to limit the pressure of a hydraulic circuit by opening a bypass for the flow if the pressure reaches the setting limit. The difference in naming is more dependent on the function you are using those devices for. However, a PRV most often is desired to act as a PSV in simple circuit designs.

- Both do not regulate the flow but the pressure only! (of course, the flow to the normal direction becomes affected if rise of pressure getting limited by opening of PSV/PRV, but the valves not taking care about flow rates. The common PRV/PSV therefore are made for a large application range regarding the release flow rate: e.g. for 90 l/min max.

Whether the valves in principle can be used alternatively there are many differences in features possible. A PSV for instance can be of simple and robust design; accuracy and pressure stability (once it opens) can be poor - because protection damage against bursting (damage to humans are in main focus; protection of equipment is a secondary aspect!!) does not require precision but reliability!

For a PRV the requirements for precision in maintaining a constant max. pressure can be essential for an application. In some applications the PRV are used to ensure a constant feeding pressure. The PRV therefore is operated with a (small) opening, releasing a small part of the total pump flow always. For such fuction not only a stable pressure is important but also the PRV must be technically able to deal with the heat generated from permanent release of fluid. Futher more the valves spring characteristic should not lead to oscillations in the hydraulic circuit (resonance problems; especially for applications with high pressure sometimes can drive someone crazy).

Those differences in my opinion are good (and important) arguments to use different names for the valves:

PRV - for valves with "enhenced" features, designed for certain demands on fuctions. This valve type often can take over the function of a PSV in combination.

PSV - simple and robust (and cheap) designs but of highest reliability. These valve usually can't be used successfully as a processing-PRV.

u have explained it nicely but just for my clarification what i have understood is prv acts as both psv & prv but psv operates by brusting or opening & never seats back & equipment protection is damaged.so it means psv has to be replaced everytime it operates.......please correct me if i am, wrong

Also depends on the application of these valves.........

e.g. On a diesel engine lubrication system you will have a pressure relief valve......this prevents over pressurisation in the circuit and controls circuit pressure............this maybe set at say 55 psi. Also in the circuit you can have a safety valve that is set at at 5 psi above relief valve pressure.

This is Incorporated because under certain conditions the relief valve may not be able to control the rapid oil pressure rise........the safety valve then operates to prevent excessive pressure build up that could damage filters.oil coolers, etc.

An example of where you may not have a relief valve and only a safety valve, is a boiler..............once excess pressure occurs in the boiler a pilot operated full-bore safety valve lifts and relieves excess pressure to atmosphere via a waste steam pipe.............and this occurs with a deafening roar...........once the pressure drops to its predetermined operating pressure the valve slams shut............without leaking..........we hope

Pressure relief valves are commonly used to protect a fluid powered, maybe some air powered (if necessary), and or gas powered(if necessary) systems or any system that will protect it from overpressure and just stalling a process.

In hydraulics(hydrostatic application), a pressure control valve termed as pressure relief valve protects the system pressure that may be caused by too much resistance on pressurized fluid or in some cases against pressure build-up due to fluid thermal expansion. As a pressure control valve, they only control the pressure and dont be confused as to why some hydraulic actuators move faster when you increase the relief valve setting (its a different case). They dont control flow.

Relief valves are mainly normally closed valves and any action that may cause this valve to open at higher pressures are considered power losses converted to heat(termed as Pressure drop=difference in pressure across the valve ports=my name).

Pressure safety valve is quite a very broad term, and a pressure relief valve can be considered a pressure safety valve since it can be adjusted to protect any system from getting damaged due to overpressure but would just stall the machine and not tripping any prime mover. A pressure switch, pressure transducer and pressure gauge with electrical connections can be used to protect/monitor or dictate pressured systems but IMO I cant consider them as valves.

hi,My understand :PRV(pressure relief valve) is used for gas or liquid or both two phase fluid. PSV(pressure safety valve) is used for gas only.therefore PSV is one type of PRV.

In systems containing liquid you can have both valves. e.g. in lubrication systems on some diesel engines you have a relief valve set at a specified pressure, as well as a safety valve that is set at, say 5 psi above the relief valve pressure.

<...PSV...> can also mean "pressure sustaining valve" - hence the overwhelming need to define TLAs before using them, especially in this forum.
