Von Mises and Tresca SCL Results

05/08/2009 7:48 AM

I am M.tech Student from India doing Dissertation work on ASME VIII-2 ED.2007.

I have visited

http://www.pveng.com/documents/content_205.pdf

[ nuts and bolts of stress linearisation ]

and found that Von mises SCL results are lower than Tresca SCL results about 85 to 100%.

why this happens? I have also done FEA and obtain SCL for both the theory of failure .
and found the in the same manner means von mises are 85 to 100% of tresca... as given in the paper or guide in http://www.pveng.com/documents/content_205.pdf
Please give me reason why this is ? because generally Von mises results are always higher than the tresca's resulst...

What you are seeing is normal.

  • Generally using the von Mises criterion overestimates burst pressure and provides an upper bound. (in other words, has lower stress)
  • Generally the Tresca criterion underestimates burst pressure and provides a lower bound. (gives stresses that are higher than reality)

This can be seen by the fundamental definitions of the two criteria:

Tresca:

von Mises:

where σ0 is the yield strength in tension.

Which leads to the yield criterion of failure :

Tresca: (σ13)/σ0 = 1

von Mises: (σ13)/σ0 = 2/[√(3+μ2]

where μ is the Lode stress parameter = (2σ213)/(σ13)

You are welcome, here is a simple example/derivation:

Which is in agreement with the failure map of the two theories:
