Kubuntu 9.04: Great OS, or The Greatest OS?

05/24/2009 6:25 PM

Up until a few weeks ago I hated Linux. There was a lot of reasons why really and not much good will come of talking about them. Ultimately I felt like all the Linux OS's were overly complicated. Trying to be everything to everybody and creating a mess instead.

Then I downloaded Kubuntu 9.04. I mean....wow, it's awesome. Downloading and installing programs are easier, boots fast, runs clean. I can barely express how incredibly awesome it is. Just #$&@& amazing. I'm hooked. I installed it on my laptop as a dual boot, which sounds impressive but only amounted to me putting a CD in my drive and hitting next a bunch of times. The funny thing is, since I've installed it, I haven't used windows at all.....and believe me, I would have switched back in a second if the going got even remotely tough, I don't have much patience for programming or protocols or other computer stuff. It's just really that good.

This post isn't for people who've never tried Linux, it's for people who've tried Linux, got frustrated and gave up. If that last bit is you, do yourself a favor, go to this link, burn a CD, defrag your computer, then use the CD to install Kubuntu. You won't believe how intuitive and awesome it is.

For anyone who has used Ubuntu or Kubuntu in the past and wasn't impressed, I'm talking specifically about 9.04.

Roger

Hi Roger,

I haven't had experience with Linux OSs, but have thought a lot about using one. Just this last week, I downloaded OpenOffice and was quite impressed, although the Math module, similar to MS equation editor, looks like it will take a shallower learning curve than I would have liked.

Thanks for posting this - even though I gained much of my computing experience with MS products, I am not happy with the way they do business and am skeptical about trying Vista.

... and here I go, downloading Kubuntu with MSIE! ... (Oh the irony)

Mike

It must be be some liberal subversive plot, hatched by the evil socialist elite to curtail our freedom

Thought I'd get in a premptive strike before Mr. guest replies...

Thanks for the link, now if I could only find a decent instruction set for doing a dual boot system, I'd be all set...

That's the thing, no instructions needed. Kubuntu will set up dual boot when you install it (it gives you options, you merely have to select dual boot).

Yes i agree linux is very impressive these days, and no matter what the anti-linux posters say.

Linux is free! you cannot beat that!

Thanks for the post Roger. I have been using Linux 8.04 (Haughty Heron) and have installed it on half of my computers after my grandson (16 yrs old) installed it as a dual boot on one of my machines. Linux has some great advantages over MS and I am still learning how to use it's capabilities.

The main disadvantages I had encountered with 8.04 were the excessive flexibility you have with Linux and a real lack of solid documentation. After purchasing and reading 2 texts about Linux, I learned how to use it much better.

From your post it seems that Linux has been made much more user-friendly in 9.04; I will have to give that version a try. Thanks for the heads up.

You need some friends who are well versed in Linux lore, Check your colleagues there is always one who seems to be Linux nerd, at my company i had a colleague who spread the Gospel of Linux, if i had any questions i would go to him.

For anyone with an older machine, its a good way to go but be warned, it needs at least 1/2 GB memory to allow installation.....more is better.

Yeeeaaahh Yeeeaaahh!!! I know I know is much easier to have the machines happy than people instead,a lot of complaints regardless how hard you tried- 'No Win Situation' anyhow, what we can do? OooooHhHHh Brotheeeerrrrrrr. Forget it tomorrow is another one no matter what. AnyHow hang in there and it will come to you down the road, I'll Bet. Easy does It and like I pointed out many times before, 'Murphy Law' is always present at every aspect, remember this and relaaaaaxxxxx....

And if that 'Puppy' are having short term memory trouble then 'Crank it Up' with some more 'Memory Juice' probably some 200 MB to see how react then, I don't Know! And last thing will be by trying to Un-Plug It for a while and take it 'Internal Battery' out for couples days clean-up any dust inside in the meantime and then reinstall and re-boot the whole thing fresh start like new. Probably some 'Virus-Worm-Trojans-Etc.- vanish on the operation. Who Know's? Have fun now and no rush.

It's Friday Yet?

To whom it may concern,

I just put in Ubunto 9.04. I had 8.04 previously, and have been trying it for 2 years or so. The first few versions would only open about half my floppies unless I used the command line. That problem was fixed and doesn't matter much anymore. 9.04 still won't talk to my Linksys wireless device, and still won't print to my Lexmark X3350 printer. Any new devices I buy will be Linux compatible. I do not intend to buy any Windows OS. In the meantime, though, I will stick to XP as long as it will work for me or until I get compatible devices.
