Best Way to Protect Home Electrical Equipment from EMP?

05/31/2009 11:34 AM

I have been reading a lot about the danger of Electromagnetic Pulses destroying electronics in computers, cars, and all sorts of electronic equipment. Also historical information about the Carrington effect. In 1858 a lot of electrical equipment was ruined and caught on fire due to sun spots. There are predictions of a future increase in sun spot activity, although they are relatively inactive right now. Then there are the man made EMP possibilities. All I know of is lead shielding as in X-ray rooms.

Get out the tin foil! Wrap all your electronics in it and bury it for the next two years.

No, seriously, there's not much to help with sun spots. Kinda like Y2K, what will be will be, and it probably won't be that bad.

Short of global thermonuclear war, I wouldn't worry about man made EMP, either.

Besides the obvious like installing the best surge protection/UPS units you can afford, one low-tech option is a Faraday cage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage

Actually, that nifty metal case your desktop has around it will provide a certain amount of protection. External stuff like flash drives, etc. will be vulnerable.

You might also want to get a good electrician to test the grounding on your electrical system. I've seen some grounded to copper water pipes, which could act like a giant antenna if hit by an EMP. Plus, somebody touching a pipe during an electrical problem could get zapped.

ToughBook laptops are also reputed to be protected against EMP.

How about a lead lined metal storage box? Would autos be disabled? Is equipment that is turned off resistant to damage? How long would the internet and electrical grid be down? Sorry, I know you are not the answer man, but you seem to have some concern about the issue, as some others do. I think EMP resistant gear would be a nice selling feature. Also that protective boxes for laptops would be a good idea. I wonder what Google etc. have for protection and backup. Google seems to have much of the web mirrored on its servers. My motto is plan for the best, but be prepared for the worst.

"EMP resistant gear would be a nice selling feature"

You will need from .0625-.125 inch thickness of Al to provide "EMP resistant gear".

That will protect you from smaller tactical EMP's if it comes to that.

Never worked with the heavier metals. Dense stuff was too heavy to launch.

verry slowly.......put that nuclear device down........and back away, veerrry slowly.

And every thing will be ok.

I'm thinking the next time I have to re-roof I'll use metal roofing instead of shingles. Would anyone know if that would help? I'll assume it should be grounded, yes? Gonna do it anyway, but the EMP protection would be a plus.

(I know, to be 'Green', it should be white, but there are some really great new colors available.)

I have a house with metal roof, metal framing and supported on steel poles.

While I may be protected from EMP etc, it plays havoc with the TV reception.

I'm reluctant to get an external antenna because that will limit where I can put the TV, hence limiting Mrs Sceptic when she wants to rearrange the furniture. I am happy enough for her to do this as it gives her a change and is considerably less hassle than moving house!

I can recommend steel roofing. It seems long lasting, trouble free and cyclone proof.

If the EMP is from a nuclear explosion than your home electrical equipment from EMP are the least of your worries.

If it is from a solar flare a Faraday cage would suffice, but probably your GPS, TV or phone would have problems because many Satellites would be fried

It might be a bit expensive, but a metal roof (a good idea anyway) and expanded metal mesh under the siding would turn the whole house into a Faraday cage. The windows would need some sort of treatment also.

Anybody know what the effective range of the EMP is from an airburst nuke deliberately configured to cause max EMP?

50,000 Feet above Omaha Nebraska should do coast to coast IIRC.

The metal roof and metal lathe under the siding may help

Live under ground...Shield all devices adequately...don't watch your food cook in the micro...push three or four nine foot long copper rods into; not dry soil at least twelve apart and ground your system to them.

The biggest problem from the sun apears to be major dc currents induced into the power lines when solar winds penetrate the magnetosphere. The longer the distance, the more problem. Only one country has attempted to address this problem. CANADA They isolate transformers (which usually fry because of this) with large capacitors. The cost to do this is high and no power companies in the US will do it. I'd buy a standby generator with about a year or two of fuel. It will take that long to get the grid back up when this event happens. I'm banking on being gone by then. By the way, I'd shield my house with a heavy aluminum foil and ground it for the solar wind that will hit the earth when the magnetosphere collapses. It might help a little for an EMP also. I don't think a faraday shield will help at all for an EMP and I know it it won't help for a solar wind. The only thing for a nuclear EMP is to bend over and kiss your --- goodby.

I just read that an old microwave would be a good place to store electrical equipment. Sort of a Faraday cage. But what about the magnet?
