Powder Coating Wrought Aluminum

06/04/2009 8:36 AM

Hi,

We want to powder coat some wrought aluminum 6061 that has been HT to T6. The powder coating goes to 356 fahrenheit (180C) for about 1 hour, this is around about the ageing temp for 6061, will it effect the properties of the alloy?

Thanks in advance..

toys19 Im not sure about your 6061 but we had an aluminum spoiler for a race car powder coated and it became very soft and unusable. Jerrell

Hi,

Normal aging temperatures for 6061 are between 320 and 350 F, depending on the product type (rolled, forged...). If the intended coating process needs holding 1 hour at 356F, the alloy will result over-aged.

Anyway, I recommend you to make a test just heating a test coupon (not necessarily coated) at 360 F for 1 hour and test it. Depending on the specific aging given to the raw material, the loss in mechanical properties can be acceptable for your intended use.

Kind regards
