Lost Keys? No Problem!

06/10/2009 10:43 AM

I Just found this on Halfbakery, what a great idea! What do you guys think? I reckon with a few tweaks this basic idea could have a huge number of applications.

Key Teleportation

I can't get reliable key duplication when I have the original in my hand anymore.

Simple: you give them your details by telepathy, and they teleport the duplicate key back, or (alternatively) they teleport you to an earlier time, when you never had the key in the first place, and/or had the desire to have such a key, let alone a duplicate of it.

It's a matter of common practice.

It's a solution looking for a problem. For the price of just a few coins one could hide a spare key elsewhere so at least one could get in when one gets home without those pesky keys.

Isn't technology wonderful?

Sounds like a good concept, dunno how often the need would arise.

What if I have the keys but can't find my car in the car park...can they do me a duplicate car?

I thought it was supposed to be women who lose cars in car parks. I had a bf who was amazed when, on coming out of a supermarket, he asked me where the car was and I, in a slightly surprised manner, described where it was straight away. I was offended that he thought I couldn't find it.

Do you two get to the top of stairs and forget why you went up?

I can't get out of the room remembering what I was leaving for

Worst case I ever had "losing the car" Denver International Airport, don't remember where I went, but the return involved heavy luggage.

Tossed it on the shoulder like a seabag and started walking, and walking, and walking

Turns out DIA has entirely symetrical parking garages on either side - identical in every respect.

Fortunately they monitor the security cams and come retrieve you if you start going in circles

Yeah that kind of sexist attitude is really out of order. My pet-peeve is supermarket queues ; That scenario when the idiot in front stands watching the checkout person put there goods thru then, when it's all done, and only then, begins fumbling around for the credit card. There's usually an agonising wait whilst they faff about trying to get the right one, then try to get the right pin number. They also wait until after all of that before putting the bags in the trolley, leaving everybody else in the queue fuming . I've learned how to avoid it now - it's the customers with handbags.

Yeah, they cant shove their bags to the end of the chute or to one side while they reorganise their entire purse.

Had a classic t'other day... she had a whole load of shopping, but insisted on putting a 35p bottle of water through the checkout separately and waiting for the reciept, 'cos it was for work or her Mum..or whatever...35p... jeez...I'd have paid her more than that to stop arseing about.

Jeez, it's a wonder she didn't put the bunch of grapes through one at a time.

I s'pose I should be gratefull she didn't have a fist full of expired vouchers for 0.0005p off tins of dog food to mess about with too.

Re: Lost Keys

06/14/2009 7:26 AM

Back when I was working as a field engineer I raced to a customers site parking the car in the multi level underground car park. Taking careful note of the position of the car I raced to the lift and headed for the customers computer room. About half way to the customers floor I realized that while I had taken careful note of where I had parked the car I had omitted to ascertain which of the 8 levels of underground parking I had used.

Oh, smegging piles of excrement!

It took some time to find the car and of course it was about as far away from the elevators as was possible. GPS wasn't readily available at the time but I don't think it would work 20 metres or so underground.

ROFL ! From what I've seen, forgetting floor-level is much more common than forgetting location of car on the particular level. Maybe it's just peoples brains foccusing on the tricky part (where the heck it is amidst all the other cars) rather than what ought to be the easy bit.

8 underground levels - where the heck was it ? Some sort of computer back up facility in a disused mine ? I can't think of anything like that in the UK. A couple of levels maybe, but 8 is a fair way down.

The only flaw I see is that there's got to be a way to take the wife out of the process. To a lesser extent due to the inconvenience of managing to reach her on her business trip, but mostly due to not letting her know (yet again) what a klutzy dunderhead you are. This is about self-preservation, gentlemen.

Perhaps you could just keep electronic copies of your keys on file in a secure online location? Then call a local locksmith, give him access, have him bring you the duplicates and pay him in cash so she's none the wiser.

Then it's just a matter of madly scurrying all over town to find a duplicate of that monogrammed keychain she gave you.

Not to mention the additional revenue of "storing" the data for you against the day.

AND now you are selling it like insurance rather than a service - because more will worry than will actually need the service you have broadened you customer base.

Excellent! (rubs hands together)

The only problem I see is that some car keys contain an ID chip. Even if the key can be made to fit the tumblers, it still won't start the car. That can be overcome by reading, sending and then writing that information. But then you open a whole new can of worms in terms of security. Good business for a car thief ring to start.

If a car thief is going to go to the trouble to hack into my key information storage site, get my key info, somehow link that info to me by name or address (presumably there would be a security provision to seperate the two), load my car's ID chip info into a blank key, grind it to fit the tumblers, track down wherever I've parked my car and steal it with the duplicate key...then I say good on 'em. They deserve the reward.

For most house keys, all you really need is the type of lock and warding style and then the height of the cuts which to a locksmith just boils down to a set of numbers.

You give them the numbers and they can cut the key. Many locks have numbers on them or on the key which can be translated via an algorithm into the info needed to make a key.

A simple device for decoding the cut heights off a key already exists, its just a metal part with an angle and different height cuts.

If said wife went to a locksmith and handed him the key, he would be able to give the necessary info over the phone to a locksmith anywhere in the world who could then cut a key.

A scanner could automate this process (although its not hard), and I guess would be cool, although a decent locksmith could probably make a key from a picture if it came down to it.

Of course a decent locksmith could also pick the lock in the first place.

We have done this a number of times. Client kisses spouse who gets onto the bus to airport.... client goes back to car in parking garage to realize spouse took the keys...

Yes, we COULD fit keys from scratch, but on some cars the price will be a LOT lower if we have the info to cut the key.

I have had clients keep an image of the key tag in a dropbox folder file ( code number ) which out database converts to the info to cut the key. They can access this info anywhere in the world.

Some original keys have the code numbers on them, and none are automotive, unless fairly old. All manufacturers should be using a blind code number, and some do. They never should be the actual cuts in proper order. Even in the day of CNC machines that can touch off and read a key, we still do use slide guages for common keys, as it is faster.

For those that have trouble getting good copies made, you got to skip the Kiosk and supermarket, and go to a GOOD locksmith, one invested, not one stuck in the 18th century.

Worn keys duplicate poorly, so decoding, and cutting back to specifications is a common exercise we do all the time. Particularly on car keys, that have closer tolerances than ever.

I remember once leaving the keys to my car in the glove/manual compartment of a Cessna 172RG I had just been flying. I realized where I had left them only to look up and see said aircraft depart on a three day multi stop long distance flight.

Fortunately the pilot was good enough to come back and return my keys otherwise the car would have been stuck at the airport for days.

Good idea. But you can take any key that fits the lock entrance, ram it hard and fast and turn the key the instant it bottoms out.

I still use a Hide-A-Key® for each vehicle. Duplicates are in the boot.

The simple solution is to have your locks keyed to an RFID chip which you would carry neatly implanted in your hand, or possible forehead.

"So the Avatar is your present day photograph!"

It was when it was taken.

Just to show I'm not an ageist, sexist, mysoginist bully..
There was a little old lady in front a while back...she'd put her few quids worth through the checkout but couldn't find any money at all.
She was getting quite flustered, embarassed and didn't know what to do.
So I put it on my card, and reassured her it was ok....just hope someone would do the same for my Mum in those circumstances. It was only a fiver...

That's a nice anecdote, and a point worth making. I reckon almost all the folk here are of a similar mind/action, but some tongue-in-cheek levity is a nice break from the merchant bankers of this world. It's like when you see organizations that use every chance to shout their 'anti-this/anti-that' non-descrimination credentials, and you just know they're going to be doing the exact opposite. Same with people. I'll go and tell that pensioner he can have an hour off from digging my garden

All my imaginary friends are just as nice - it's why I keep 'em

from a friends blog a couple days ago - redacted for privacy

The lady in front of me in line was having some conversation with the clerk that wasn't going anywhere, and so there I stood, rolling my eyes, waiting, tapping my foot, etc.

I listened in trying to figure out what the problem was. This elderly lady was waving a piece of paper at the probably nineteen-year old clerk, "My son needs these things, this is what I need...." she said, desperately.

The clerk was looking at her like she'd sprung a second head. "Did you call in for that?"She replied "my son...he wrote this down just now....I need these things!

"The clerk looked at her list, "Coffeemate, that's over in the freezer section," he said, waving distractedly and shooing her away. She shuffled off, muttering, "I need these things...."

I paid for my stuff, and as I left the store, I saw the woman pleading with another clerk, and getting more frustrated and disoriented....We went back inside. I didn't see her immediately, so we went over toward the freezer section. She wasn't there, either. So we turned and walked a few aisles.I found her, standing in another aisle, completely lost, eyes wide, and she was frantic.

She looked about like I did the first time I entered Times Square, only way less excited and eight times as scared. She held out her piece of paper to me and said, so plaintively, "Can you help me?""Yes, I can," I said, and she visibly relaxed.

TGM and I helped her get the items on her list while and got her to the cash register. Then we took our leave and went on about our way.I sure do hope that lady found her way home ok.

And then there are creative ways to deal with these things

On the surface it seemed like a good idea...then it came to me; "Why not call a locksmith?"

Because then you can include the locksmith with the growing list of the potential holders of those tried-and-tested copies.

Of keys to your car - what else ?

A halfway decent locksmith can open most locks without a key anyhow. Locks only protect against honest people.

"...Locks only protect against honest people..." - is this a a pradox or what

With truly honest people you don't need locks in the first place.

Locks are more likey for so-called "honest people".

This is/was a nice place. Maybe the need for locks correlates with population size ? I know a fair number of people who don't lock up when going out. Not something I'd do in this day and age, but the idea is "why stress all the time over getting burgled, it's only 'stuff'. Better to just get on with life ". Maybe the number of locks in a community is the measure of how 'civilized' it is ? I dunno, I'm just rambling again until the meds kick in.

Anyway, if somebody has lost the key, they've probaly lost the phone or forgot the number to dial for help. Break in and replace the door/window/chimney.

I seem to vaguely remeber one of Heinlein's character's musing something of the sort, Lazarus Long - gotta be in my notes here somewhere....

You are right.

You will be surprised that in few states of India, like Punjab, still no lock are used in lodges. You leave it open, while going out. Still your stuff in the room will be safe.
