For a liquid, just keep the average velocity between 1 and 3m/s. That's it.

The answer for liquids has been stated above.

For gases, limit the velocity to 10m/s. If it's below about 3m/s, the pipe is too large.

For flammable, non-ionic liquids, keep the velocity below 1m/s so that there is a lower tendency for static electrical charges to build up in the liquid.

Re pipe size calculation;

1. volume flow rate is required ie, Q lts/s

2. limiting flow velocity, ie; v/m/s

calculation would be Find area of bore = Q/v = Qx0.001/v = area ( m* )

therefore pipe diameter d = sq root of 4xa/pi = diameter in meters

example. Q is 12.6l/s and velocity is 2.44m/s

Area of bore 12.6 x 0.001/ 2.44 = 5.16 x 0.001m*

Diameter of bore sqr root of 4 x 5.16 x 0.001/3.142 = 0.081m = 81mm

use 80mm nominal bore pipe.

Hope this is helpful
